We're remodeling out kitchen. The cabinets will be a maple with a Whiskey Black glaze - sort of a deep golden medium brown. The island will be a worn heirloom black finish to give the room contrast. Has anyone used two different granite colors in their kitchen - one for the cabinets and one for the island? Not sure how that would look. I guess you'd pretty much have to have one a solid or very close to solid color...like Uba Tuba, or Absolute Black, and follow with a contrasting exotic (one with movement) for the island? Has anyone been able to find a combination of two exotics that look well together?

No personal experience, but I've seen it done on HGTV. Apparently it's all the rage. And looks good too!

:)

We have done that in our kitchen.

We have one section in our kitchen where it is our "feature wall" where we have some black granite.

The rest of our kitchen is grey and brown with sparkle in it.

I'll see if I can find a photo and post.

I know someone with 2 different shades of gray for their countertops. Don't recall if the light color was on the island or the countertops. Yes, it did look nice!

Okay, I found a picture, I haven't posted a pic for awhile, so hopefully this works:

We have two different products on our counter and island. We used the floor and back splash to tie them together. The island is the darker color. The lighter color predominates the floor with the darker color as the accent.

I can see how using a solid color in one spot of the kitchen (like a black) would work against another color like an exotic. But has anyone seen a case where there are two granite colors that both have some sort of pattern to it? I see no other way to do two colors other than to have a solid (like black) contrasted to a pattern of any kind.

Yeah, because otherwise you'd have so many different things going on---2 different colors of cabinetry, 2 countertops, flooring, backsplash--it'd be too much, wouldn't it? Like you couldn't make up your mind. ;)

Good luck.

I've picked out my cabinets & flooring but still to go and pick out a piece of granite and then my backsplash. it is definitely alot of choices and a lot of choosing!!

One of ours is a solid color. The other has a pattern but not a very busy one.

When we were remodeling our kitchen we found the website of www.gardenweb.com to be invaluable. Under the kitchen forum they have a photo gallery of finished projects and lots of pictures of multi-color kitchens...very popular for quite some time now.

We went with two wood tones but the same granite color to tie everything together. Our cabinets are cherry and our island is off-white....another popular trend.

I could see how it could be done but I'd probably use one that was solid or very plain and then one that had a little bit more to it, but picked up the solid color.

I think a PP said something about having solid black on an island & then a gray and black veined style on the rest of the counters. That sounds nice.

:thumbsup2It is all the rage today

=island somertimes is different material and color than countertops

I'd go with a "wilder" look on the island:)

We have Tropic Brown on our island

and green slate tiel on our countertops. Oh yeah, tumbled marble backsplash too, so lots of different colors and textures on our walls and cabinets, but it all works. TOo bad the kitchen is so messy from DDs birthday party or Id post pictures.

http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/ HUNDREDS of finished kitchen projects to look at. They are the finished kitchens of posters from Gardenwebs Kitchen Forum. I find the easiest way to view, is to use the slideshow link on the right hand side, then click photo & again to get the posters list of supplies.

Also, on the right, if you click Categories, then Cabinets, then mixed cabinets, you'll filter all the kitchens down to just these that have mixed cabinets. http://delicious.com/starpooh/b4:Cabinet_Mixed:Yes?detail=1

I'm sure you'll more more than enough examples of choices you like & don't like. And you can even post on the kitchen forum to ask questions.

we have rustic alder cabinets, absolute black granite countertops, and volga blue on our Island. The back splash is slate tile. I designed it....so obviously I like the look :)

Judy, I chose rustic alder for my cabinets also! Haven't picked the granite yet--DH wants dark though. I'm a "know i when I see it type" We actually looked at slate tile the other day but decided we'd beter wait to see what the granite is going to be before trying to really look for a backsplash.
