Using total points

Don't mean to sound dumb but...I saw in other posts where people own 50 points at a resort and 70 at another and 200 at another... How are these used??? When you plan a vacation, do you use the points added in total??? Such as 200+50+70=420????

You can use the 11 - 8 month reservation period only with points at the home resort. Once you pass the 7 month mark, you can book a reservation at any of the DVC resorts using all of the points.

I have points at VWL, VB and BWV. I like each resort at different times of the year, and I do like to book before the 7 month "open season" comes. At 7 months out I sometimes try to get into BCV, for Flower show at Epcot, and I usually exchange the BWV ressie that I had made earlier for one at BCV. This has worked so far for me, for 3 years now.

I own points at 6 of the 7 resorts. How I use them depends on the res. I want to make. If I need a specific resort at a specific time, I try to take advantage of the 11 month booking window. In this case I would use my BWV points for BWV res. for example. This may involve banking and borrowing of just those resorts points to get my res. If however, I am booking within 7 months, I just use whichever resorts points I think I won't need for something else. (MS asks which resorts points to use when I make a res. and in this instance I can group say 20 BWV + 50 BCV + etc.) Also, for cruises or hotels at Disney - I can group points. However, I believe if you are going to do an Interval trade, MS is reserving a week and trading it - so points usage would follow 11mo/7mo. guidelines. I just keep a ledger by year to keep track of what I'm using and verify my balance at each resort with MS after I make a res. Sounds more complicated than it is.
