DD is practically potty trained. I am hoping she will be fully trained by our trip. My ? is do you bring any sort of potty seat with you? Public restrooms are not like home so I need ideas on what to bring to make me and her feel most comfortable. I am most worried about her sitting on and touching the seats. HAs anyone brought cleaning wipes with them? I don't mean to sound germ paranoid but a 3 yo and public restrooms can be messy. So give me some ideas..

When my children were little, I had a foldable seat that sat on the toilet. It made the opening smaller and it also covered the toilet seat. I think I got mine from Toys-R-Us or Right start, It was 8 years ago but I would think that something similar is still available. It folded into fourths and fit into a ziploc bag, it was hard plastic so it was easy to wipe and disinfect. Someone also suggested carrying a small can of lysol and spraying the toilet seat before using. Good Luck.

You also want to take some small stickers to cover the motion sensor. If you don't, it will flush when your dd is sitting on it and they are turbo flushes, so it might scare her. Just put the sticker over the little red lens and take it off when she is done.

We went to Disney three weeks after dd was potty trained! We were really nervous but pleasantly surprised. We brought 20 pairs of underwear worried she would have accidents. Fortunately she only had 4 the entire week. We were so proud. But I was careful to take her 20 minutes after she drank any liquids and every two hours normally. I also watched for the pee pee dance which also helped.

We brought a foldable potty seat we found at babies r us. I also brought Kando wipes just in case. I read the baby care centers have small kid-size potties but I read it after I returned. It may be worth checking out especially for BM trips. I think the biggest issue was she couldn't reach the sink and she was frustrated when I had to pick her up to wash her hands!

Good luck!

That's good to know, my ds is potty learning.
Thanks!

I was holding off PT my daughter until after the trip, and wouldn't you know? She went and did it herself right before we left. It wasn't bad at all though, I had to get over the whole potty touching thing and just wash up afterwards. However, what I didn't really think about until I read it on these boards, is that they are all auto. flushers and she DID NOT like that. I had to place my hand over the sensor so it wouldn't flush until she was done. I had read a post about bringing those mini post its to put over it and didn't do it, but I can see how they would have been handy. But, I just put my hand over it until she finished.

She did wear a pull up, but most days did just fine and we washed as best we could when we were done!

Thanks for the ideas esp the stickers. I think I will carry a Lysol can, if I can find a small can. They are huge in the store.Im going to look for a protable potty cover too.

I love our fold up seat! Don't use it much anymore, as DS3 is real good about going before we leave home (hotel room...). Also fortunate that he is a boy. The first day of our August trip DH let him stand on his toes to pee...he now refuses to sit to pee. And he is real regular with BMs, so we don't have to worry about him needing to do that while out. But to this day, if we are going to be out for an extended period of time, or he hasn't pooped yet, we take the fold up seat with us. Has its own carry bag and everything. Now we mostly use it for at Hockey games (they almost always fall during the time range that he has to poop, and he is afraid of the big seats).

But the fold up seat was the greatest thing for training while traveling! Didn't go anywhere without it. Saved us from accidents and having to keep using pullups all the time.

We have the fold up seat as well. It's great!! I keep it in a big ziploc bag and always carry a small package of lysol wipes (travel or trial size) with us. I use the wipes to wipe down the potty, and then put the seat on. Afterwards, I wipe the seat before I put it away. I think I bought my seat at Toys R Us.

Lysol is an idea, but doesn't it have to sit for a period of time (a minute? 3 minutes? what is it?) before it kills all germs on a surface? Not sure that I would want to wait like that with an antsy preschooler needing to use the potty! I'd do the folding seat or portable seat covers (you can get them at Target in the travel size section, though I think that I saw paper seat covers at all the public potties on our recent trip to WDW - and I'm pg so saw a lot of potties on our trip).

When dd was 'just' potty trained we went to WDW. I can tell you 9 out of 10 times prior to our trip, the only place at home she'd go was on her potty chair in front of the TV! At pre school she went in the regular bathroom though. I was concerned when we left for our trip if she'd go on the toilet in the bathroom with her potty ring. I brought her potty ring and amazingly enough she went no problem on the regular toilet in our room with her ring.

I also brought one of those "fold up" rings when we went to the parks but she didn't like it. We started out by going to the baby care centers in the parks to use their (toddler sized) toilets, evenutally she used the regular toilets (no ring!)...so I think it was a control issue. By the time we returned home she never used the potty chair again! I wiped the seat off before she'd sit on it then, although most of the bathrooms in WDW are pretty clean. Just bring some hand sanitizer, you can always wash or wipe her hands afterwards which of course you should do anyway ;) We CONSTANTLY use hand sanitizer anywhere we go, especially at WDW. That's a whole other thread in itself :goodvibes

stick a small pack of post it notes in your purse to use for this - my child was scared everytime those toilets flushed while she was on them and then she wouldn't "go".

THANKYOU tjmouse!!! I never thought of covering the sensors. DD5 and DS2 are scared to death of those LOUD power flushes. DS got to the point where he would only go in the urinals in the men's room because he was scared to even go inside the women's restroom. Not a bad deal for me, never having to take him to the restroom. :teeth:

We have just returned for our vacation and for once i was not concerned with the whole touching the toilet thing with my kids, when you have seen what some of the UK's public toilets are like, believe me disney toilets are spotless and so so clean. Returning to the UK has really opened my eyes to the standards that they have at disney compared to those we have at home.

I just let my kids get on with it and the they washed their hands afterwards, just like we do, and the only upset tummy they had was from the goofy sugar free candies...LOL

I'm planning to get one of those folding seats for DD until she gets used to big toilets. They're small enough that you can keep them with you all the time.

DS 5 has always been fine with a regular seat - he uses his hands to stay on if he needs to sit - and we always wash up well. He has to go #2 in every public restroom on the planet, so we can't worry too much about having lysol and stuff. In 2 years of touring the bathrooms of NJ (& FL!), he hasn't picked up any diseases yet. :)

If the seat is the kind with the opening in the front - rather than have them try to straddle that - have them sit on the side of the potty - facing the wall. Then they aren't fighting with not falling in the middle and feel more secure.

Try to use the handicapped one - they can then hold the bar next to the potty instead of holding the potty. If not a handicap one - have them hold the wall instead of the potty. I theorize that the wall or bar is cleaner than the potty, but obviously, still do our best at washing hands.

I wouldn't fight with the Lysol thing - it sounds like a good idea, but I think it will be hard to manage with someone who 'really needs to pee'.

The stickies are definitely a good idea!

these are all great ideas. My dd2 is learning now, so hopefully she'll be pretty good at it by the time we go in Jan. Luckily WDW has tons of restrooms so you're never far away when a little one has to go!

What a great idea about the sensors. I never thought about covering it, and wish I had. During our most recent trip, DD3, who is almost potty trained, was happy to use the toilets, but didn't like the flushing in the middle of her potty session (she wiggles around a lot before getting down to business). I have to say that it was after a trip to WDW in May when DD gave up on using her potty chair and insisted on using the "big" toilet exclusively, which made traveling with her much easier.

As for public toilet seats, I guess I'm lazy. I wipe them off with tp, put DD on them, hold her hands and then wash hers and mine. I figure since she spent the first year and half of her life living in a small provincial orphanage in rural China and survived that a few stray germs here and there aren't much of a worry.
