Using space saver bags for packing

Our attendant was also happy to let us use the vacuum on board to suck the air out as we were packing to leave.

I was just going to post this reply. We've taken them on 2 DCL cruises - we asked our stateroom host if it would be possible to borrow the vacuum and we made sure to use it well before the luggage had to be in the hallway. They were NOT hesitant at all to allow us to use the vacuum. As a matter of fact, it was my husband who asked both times and I kept saying "it's ok if we can't use it" because I felt they had enough to do and both times they were soooo willing to allow us to do it.

This is great news!! I figured as long as I ask at the beginning of the day before we disembark it wouldn't be an issue. It's just a vacuum, I'm sure they have HUNDREDS on the ship. Eeek I'm excited!

I use gallon and two gallon ziplock bags. Zip them almost closed and then sit on them before I finish zipping. Works great. I have even went as far as to print labels with family member name and type of clothing (casual, dressy, swim, bed, etc) and stick those on the outside of the bag so I knew at a glance what was inside. Then I divided them among our suitcases so that if one piece was lost it wasn't all of one persons clothes just a little from each of us.

I have done this too!

We use the roll up ones - and I will say, we tried the knock-off brand first and they never worked right. However, when I spent the money for the official Space Saver brand travel bags - they work like a charm! For us, we pack them empty on the way out, then use them for our dirty clothes coming home. It creates space for souvineers, helps us keep from packing the suitcases with too much weight and I love having the dirty clothes sealed off from everything else in the suitcase.

We use the Hefty 2.5 gallon Hefty bags and they work like a charm. I specifically use them for undergarments, make unpacking very simple, just put the whole bag in a drawer for use during the week. They are also much cheaper than the space saver bags.

How do you prevent clothes from getting all wrinkled in the bags? Not a problem with diapers, sweaters and jackets, but would you squish a sports coat in a bag?

I've used space saver bags that you roll and these are great. I've also used ziplock bags and just pressed air out - also great, but smaller.

I love this method because you can easily organize everything by person or clothing type, etc.

You can also simply use a very large quality regular plastic bag (say the type that you might be required to put recycling in), pack everything in, then hold the end of the bag around a vacuum nozzle, suck the air out, and begin tying before you remove vacuum nozzle. Cheaper, though slightly more work!
