Using Southwest credits

I thought I knew most of SW policies, but here's a new one. I used a credit of $68 which was expiring 9/22/07 toward 4 flights for 8/07. When I read the confirmation I realized that now the total for those flights of $453 would expire on 9/22/07 if I cancel or rebook these flights. I was planning to do that if fares drop. I assumed just the original $68 would need to be used by that date not the new full amount. I called and they said that's correct.:confused3

I did that once too, however if you need to cancel or rebook they will issue you those LUV vouchers for the difference that are good for 6 months after the expiration date of the Ticketless Travel funds...not perfect, but at least it gives you 6 more months. You just have to call customer service and ask them for the vouchers.

Now if I am using Ticketless travel funds I apply them to just 1 ticket and make a seperate reservation for the rest of the family so it does not get so cinfusing and tie up so much $ if we change reservations.

I did ask about extending the credit and she said no. What are Luv vouchers?

I'd like to know the same thing.. I have tickets that expire the beginning of August and it would be great if I could extend them for my November trip..

I've never heard of LUV vouchers before.. What are they - and how do they work?

LUV vouchers are 6-month extensions (they're mailed to you). You get them by writing your request to SW Customer Service (call SW for the address and info needed to include in your request). Then, when you do use them, there's a spot specifically for those #s and security codes on the billing webpage; they're just like TTFs when used, and can be combined with them or used alone. :goodvibes

Thanks so much! I will definitely check into that.. :goodvibes

Credits expire one year from ORIGINAL booking date of original ticket

your credits expire 09/22/07 and that will not and cannot change by law. Ask for the six month extension.

I love southwest but I do not understand why people think ding fares are so great. Some people do get refunds usually when flight stays the same but sometimes all you get is a credit that you must use within a year and a half like you found out. If you have no plans you are either out all of your savings on the ding or you have to spend more money. Either way southwest wins.

Apparently there is some federal law about credits that limits then to one year. I spoke to a SWA CS agent who said that they really don't to take your money so that is why they offer the luv vouchers which gets around the law. They are kind of like a gift certificate.

DVC Grammy,
Thanks so much, I can definitely use credits within 6 mos. I totally understand that a credit expires one year from date of booking, but I don't like that the new fares I purchased revert to that date also. From now on I will book seperate fares. Live and learn.:thumbsup2

I figure even with the rules and restrictions we are all a lot better off with SW than other airlines where your reservation is cast in stone and completely unchangable from the tiome of booking. We fly SW enough that those credits never go to waste!

Exactly!!! Also, I can use my credits to pay for my sister's or father's ticket so they can fly from Louisville to visit me in in DC area. My credits are never wasted because I always fly from here to Louisville. I don't want to drive, I have only done it once and that is when I moved out here.

I like that we can change our reservation without penalty. Schedules change and SW gives us the ability to change if we have to!
