Using pts for non DVC hotels...

We just purchased DVC last week. We have a 10 day vacation booked for Dec at POR already and now are at SSR for the second half and on a waiting list for the first half.

If we cant get in on waiting list and end up staying at POR for the first half, we have enough points to cover those nights. We completely understand its not as good of a deal but there is only so much we can do when there is no availability.

So, my question....how do you book those points? Should we do that now? Are there limited number of rooms that you can book with DVC pts at the other resorts or if we have a reservation, can we change it to use pts? Just not sure how the timeline works with using points at non dvc hotels.

Thanks...as soon as I think we have it figured out, something else comes up and I am lost again!!! Big ole learning curve!

You would call member services. In addition to the points, there is a $95 reservation fee. Once you take the points out of DVC, they cannot go back. So if SSR came through and you already reserved the points at POR, you could not go back and use them at SSR or any DVC resort.

That is, if there is a room available at POR for the general public, is it available for us via points? Or will there be situations where we call and are told, "all the DVC rooms are gone, but I can get you a cash reservation".

In September 2006 I attempted to make a reservation on points for any DVC Resort or any WDW Resort available on points for the first week of December. Although there were rooms available for cash through CRO, the only thing I could book was AKL which had very limited availability left for DVC.

So, there may very well be CRO inventory, but that does not mean we can book with DVC points since that is from a limited availability.

We, too, are (almost) new DVCers - closing is tomorrow . It's a resale, with 120 2008 points. We can't go to WDW this summer; we are going to Disneyland because of a business conference next door, and we have reservations at the Disneyland Hotel. How can I find out how many points it would take for the Disneyland Hotel in July/August? Since that is a popular time there, do you think I would have trouble using points then, even though we already have a cash reservation? If we can't use them for the Disneyland trip, my plan is to bank them and use them at "home" the summer of 2009. Thanks.
