Using DVC at RCI or get into Marriot/Hilton time share?

Hi!
I'm debating between getting into a Marriot or Hilton timeshare for vacations out of Orlando, vs increasing DvC points and use some at RCI...

Have you had positive experiences (availability, easy to use, flexibility like number of nights) with RCI?

Any thoughts between Hilton and Marriott?

Thanks!

Don't forget that all DVC owners may take advantage of RCI's rental weeks! Most Marriot trade in II rather than RCI, so you won't find them ... and, outside Covid, you might not see many Hilton weeks offered through RCI rentals ... but there are still many great locations out there (beyond those two brands)!

My parents used to own Marriott, and I’m sorry they ever gave them up. Marriott units tend to be bigger than equivalent size DVC units, and the finishes are definitely upscale. And of course there are Marriott resorts in many more locations than DVC. Marriott trades in Interval International, and many people feel that II resorts are a little better quality than RCI resorts overall.

I don’t have much experience with Hilton timeshare units, and I haven’t used my DVC points in RCI, but I have the impression that DVC doesn’t have access to all RCI resorts and the ones DVC can access aren’t the same caliber as DVC.

If you really want to have access to TS resorts outside Orlando and are considering buying, don’t buy expensive DVC points to routinely use them outside of DVC. It isn’t worth it. You can get resale TS at much lower cost - including resale Marriott - and have access to many other destinations.

Check out the forums on the Timeshare Users Group https://tugbbs.com/forums/. Lots of owners there who love their TS and love helping others make good choices in expanding their timeshare world.

First: it is probably worth joining TUG (tug2.net and tugbbs.com) the Timeshare User's Group; there is a LOT of wisdom there about timeshares of all stripes.

My take: If you are thinking about going outside Orlando once every several years or so, using RCI is probably okay. If you want to make this a regular occurrence, owning in a system with many resorts that are attractive to you is a good idea.

Marriott does not trade via RCI, they use Interval International. You can get into Hilton HGVC resorts through RCI.

We have timeshares that trade in both RCI and II. One is Marriott (II). In my experience, the Marriott locations tend to be bigger and better quality than the places that trade in RCI. We haven't stayed in all of the places that trade in RCI, so there could be plenty there that are just as nice as the Marriott locations. But that hasn't been our experience thus far.

The other thing I've noticed is that the Hilton timeshares tend to have "resort fees", where Marriott's usually don't. For example, if you look at the Hilton timeshares in the Orlando area, many of them have "resort fees". Most Marriott's in the Orlando area don't.

I would vote for going the Marriott route vs adding more DVC points. Even if you decide you want to use your Marriott points for a Disney trip, there is a Marriott property just down the road from DS that is really conveniently located.

Hilton locations currently offered via RCI's Rental Weeks ... as found through the DVC Member website (thus, no additional timeshare purchase/buy-in; simply expanding your use of an existing ownership):
