Using banked points

So we are very new to this (just sent in contract on resale at BWV) and I have a question. Our contract is coming with 58 2008 points (August use year). We want to bank them, and I know I have until March 31st to do so. We then want to go for our first trip home in January 2010. We can book on our 11 month window in February 2009. Am I correct so far?

If that was all accurate info, then here is my question. If I call to book at 11 months in February, and I want to use the 58 banked points first, must they be banked at the time of the reservation, or can I bank them in March and then "apply" them to the reservation at that point? We don't want to have to cancel and rebook, so would it be smarter to just bank first, and then make the ressie? (Sorry for the run-on questions!)

The points would need to be banked prior to calling or MS could bank them for you when you call to make the reservation.
