Using AirTran credit

I just called and received my 1st AirTran credit. Thanks DIS for that tip.

But the customer service guy told me when I wanted to use the credit I needed to call and have them apply it. I asked if I could use it towards checked bags and he responded that the credit can't be applied towards luggage if I checked in online. But I would have to call to have it applied.

It was a bit confusing. Can anyone here clue me into the process of using Airtran credits for luggage?

The customer service representative gave you good information. In order to use the credit for luggage or to upgrade your flight, you must call their customer service line and they will apply your credit. I did this on our last trip. It was painless.

Thanks. So then am I checking in with them and paying(whatever which way) for luggage on the phone? Or still check in online and then calling?
