Using AAdvantage Miles for "free" Rental Car

Has anybody ever done this? I read in the fine print on American's website that redeeming miles for this only covers the "base rate," and that you may still be on the hook all those bogus rental car fees. How much did your "free" rental actually cost you?

I have not, but when we looked into it the amount of miles it took were outrageous compared to what the rental car cost. Of course this a 2 years ago and not at Disney/Orlando.
