When I was a wee lad, our old house just had one bathroom. Mounted above the sink was a medicine cabinet...which had a slot for "Used Razor Blades".

Am I the only one? Anyone else have/had one of these?

Did it ever get used?

What happened to the blades? Did they just drop inside the wall, or was there a box they fell in?

Future archeologists better be careful when doing a dig on these old bathrooms.

We had one. Don't know if it was ever used. The blades fall into the space between the walls.

The blades just fell into the wall. The only reason I know this, is that I had never seen one until I helped my friend renovate his bathroom. His house was build in the 1920's and we found the slot...and ALL of the old blades when we removed the medicine cabinet and the surrounding plaster walls.

It was kind of gross, but a cool history lesson at the same time.

our house apparantly had one at some point...when DH gutted the bathroom this winter he found tons of used blades in the wall. Gross!

I do remember seeing those a long time ago. Don't think my family ever used them. Did not know they just went into the wall!!!

My grandparents had one and I always wondered what happened to the blades...

My house is only 25 years old and has one in the master bath. We have certainly never used it, but I have no idea if the previous owners did.

Do they even make those flat razor blades anymore?

My sister and I would take my dad's razor...open it up, remove the blade...keeping the razor "open"...and pretend it was one of the devices used to "price" items in the supermarket.

I remember and used the slots. Dropping them into the wall seemed a lot safer than tossing them into the garbage where someone could get cut. I believe they also use them in the restrooms on airplanes, might still do.

I used those razors, called double-edge safety razors, for many years. The first blades I remember using where Gillette Blue Blades, then they went to Stainless, and then Super Stainless. I'm not sure if they still make them.

do you remember the pyramid "fad"...where putting your razor blades inside a pyramid at just the right spot would magically make/keep them sharp?:confused3

Yep, 1950s house, while renovating the bathroom pulled out medicine cabinet and saw numerous blades. DH cut out another piece of the wall to remove all the ones that had fallen. Pretty icky.

Lived in several houses / apt with these. :) Current house (built 1983) does not have one.

Yeah - I remember the used blade slot too! I don't know if my Dad used it, but I imagine he did. The house was built in the 40's.

we had one in our main bathroom until we renovated. We put change in it....quarters usually. Our house was built in the early 1950's.

Just think..with the DNA from those blades, you could clone the people who used to live in the house:scared1:

Thanks for the memory, and light hearted thread.
I remember taking my dad's blade out, not even knowing it was good, and sticking it in the slot.
Wonder why my family never questioned why they went through so many blades. Maybe I did not do it very often? :confused3
di :hippie:

I use a razor like this now and again. Closest shave I've ever had. I love it.

I'm going to check my medicine cabinet when I get home. I think I remember seeing those slots.
