I have been going through closets and found some college texts I no longer need. I sold the ones that were current or wanted, but what can I do with the ones no web sites want? I am happy to donate, but can find no one to take them. The college does not want them. Any ideas to get rid of them and hopefully help some one who could used them?

Thanks

Well I have two suggestions :) 1. you can donate to BetterworldBooks.com they do a literacy program or 2. you can donate to the local public library. I have some textbooks also that nobody wants and that are not geared toward my major (i am keeping those)

I work wiht our local Friends of the Public Library on a used book sale each year. Unfortunately, there are some books for which there is no market (a lot of old computer books fall into this category, such as Windows '95 for Dummies) and your best bet is to just recycle them. Best of luck -- Suzanne

Thanks a ton! I was able to donate 5 of my remaining books to Betterworldbooks. The library has agreed to take the rest!

Thanks again.

Where did you sell your current ones? I just found a bunch that I want to list (most are fairly current)

if you have a "half price books" store near you, they'll probably take them. i've taken them some really obscure and outdated stuff. they took it all! they even take old magazines...

We had a table of textbooks at our garage sale last month, each priced $1.00--we just wanted to get rid of them. A customer at my garage sale told me we should try to sell them online. Since we had our laptops in the garage, to surf during the lulls, my husband did some searching.

He was able to sell nearly all 25 of the books for a grand total of $338.00, much better than my $1.00 per book price.

He sold to three places: Barnes & Noble, Ecampus books, & I can't remember the third one. He told all of his class mates to type in the ISBN number into a word document. Then you could go to the different sites, [and there are many more] and cut and paste the ISBN numbers.

Each of the companies provided prepaid mailers, and we boxed all of the books up and sent them away. We received payment from all three companies. We were mostly looking to get rid of books NO one in our house will ever read.

My advise...keep checking sites. We did have a couple of "losers" those we donated to our local goodwill our library does not take textbooks. They will sell if for a $1.59.

Try this ... they will buy back old books too.

Jul 28, 2009 -- Chegg.com a new resource for renting college textbooks
Textbooks can be one of the biggest expenses of a college education. Clark upsets college professors whenever he picks on them for requiring students to use the newest edition of a book -- instead of allowing students to purchase older used versions.

Some professors have even accused the consumer champ of trying to stifle education!

Meanwhile, certain schools take kickbacks from book publishers for mandating that students use custom-edition textbooks. The production runs on these custom texts are small enough to be targeted for specific university courses.

These "boutique" books -- which may excise certain material or add a professor's published papers -- come embossed with a warning that it's illegal to sell back as a used book. The campus book stores are, of course, complicit because they refuse to buy these books from students.

So there are a lot of factors conspiring against students who are on a budget.

But what if you could rent your textbooks? Chegg.com offers just that opportunity. Chegg claims to have saved students $41 million to date. (Editor's note: This figure is accurate as of July 28, 2009.) Give it a try this fall semester.
