My husband and I are looking into and seriously considering DVC. I was wondering if someone could give me some information on the importance of when your use year is. Does it really matter what month you buy in? Thanks.

The month you buy in will not necessarily become your use year. I'm not really sure whether it really matters when your use year is.

It doesn't really matter when the UY is. UY will give you a basis for deadlines on banking and such. If you travel the same time every year it really doesn't matter...its when cancellations occur close to a UY end that make effect the points. Resale contracts and buying into a sold out resort through Disney already have UY established........SSR I'm not to sure on...they may base your UY on the time of purchase...but others can answer that have bought into SSR through Disney.

Yes. If we had bought SSR in May when we were at WDW, our UY would have been December. Buying in June, our UY would have been February. I don't know what it will be for July, etc.

The importance of use year is minimal. The only time it really becomes any issue at all is if you have to cancel a ressie last minute. So if you usually travel the same time every year, it might be important to have a use year that is just before the time you usually travel so there is plenty of flexibility with rebanking. That being said, we have been members for nearly 10 years, and we have never had to cancel a ressie last minute.

Use year is the month your points are added to your account, and banking deadlines are based on that month. That means that you are unable to bank in the last 2 months of your use year, so a cancelation might mean the loss of points. Remember that use year has nothing to do with when you can make a reservation....only when you can bank and when you get new points.
