Use Year Question...

can someone please explain the "basics" of use year to me?

we just purchased at OKW, and my guide told me to call MS to bank our 2010 points, but use year wasn't mentioned. I've read a few threads that say UY really isn't something to worry about unless we may need to cancel -can anyone shed any light on this?

read the first post there 2 times and look at your contract/call your guide to find out your UY month...then definitely come back and ask any questions you still have.

UY tells you a couple of things:

1) when your banking window closes. if your UY starts oct 1, then 8 months later on may 31 will be your last chance to bank pts into the next use year.

2) when your pts are valid - an oct UY means my 2010 UY starts on oct 1, 2010 and ends on sept 30, 2011. if i have pts in my 2010 UY (whether banked 2009 pts, current 2010 pts or borrowed 2011 pts), then they will expire on sept 30, 2011 if not used for a stay on or prior to that date (unless they are current pts banked before the window closes).

and remember, UY has nothing to do with when you can call to book a reservation.

edited to add: BTW, the short answer on cancelling involves whether you are travelling after your banking window closes...which is risky if you have to cancel, since you can no longer bank the pts into the next UY and you may not be able to do anything with them before they expire...
