Use Year - How is it selected?

We are in the process of getting our loan approved, we are buying into BLT.
A post I just read about changing use years got me thinking...our guide never asked us about the use year selection, he just told us it was February 1st.

Was that a rookie mistake on my part, should I have had some input on that, and did not know any better??

UY is important in determining when your points become "current" each year and your banking deadline.

It is ideal to have a UY that starts just before your typical travel so that you have the flexibility to bank or use up points in case you want to change or need to cancel a reservation.

Feb UY works well for people who travel between Feb and Oct, as any cancellations of these trips would allow for the banking of points (since Feb UY has a deadline of September 30th and all trips must be cancelled at least 31 days out anyway).

If you travel during those times, Feb UY is fine--however, if you forsee wanting to go Nov/Dec/Jan, then Feb is not the best.

If you want to share when you might typically be going to WDW, we can share with you ideas for UY. If you have not yet closed your contract, you can ask for it to be changed.
