Use Toll by Plate where EZ-Pass doesn't work?

We are driving to WDW in December from Illinois. Since we often drive to WDW, we own a Sun Pass.

However, this trip we are caravanning with friends who usually fly to WDW. They do have an I-Pass, which is part of the EZ-Pass system.

Of course, as we know, EZ-Pass is accepted on some Central FL roads, but not others.

The Florida Turnpike website mentions a Toll by Plate option, where our friends would go through the Sun Pass lane (over the road tolling), have a picture taken of their license plate, and just get a bill afterward. It seems like this would be the easiest, rather than buying a Sun Pass for one trip or them going through the cash lanes while we go through the Sun Pass lane (especially if over the road tolling).

Does this make sense, or is there a better option I am not thinking of?

Thank you!

You'll lose the toll discount, I think around 25%.. You'll be charged a billing fee, I think $2.50 for 30 days of tolls.

You can register their plate on your Sunpass if you have the portable kind.

Yes, thank you. But it looks like the cash price is the same as the toll by plate price, so they would just have to decide whether to pay the administrative fee.

We do have the portable kind, but we will be using it ourselves (we will be 2 cars traveling together). If we could put 2 plates on one account at the same time, that would be cool, but I am guessing the system would only be able to use 1 car at a time?

Ok, and this may sound silly, but I honestly can't remember - Can you go through a toll booth that takes cash with a SunPass? Or are the cash lanes next to the SunPass lanes? Then our group could pretty much stay together, instead of us using over the road tolling and leaving them in the dust!:P

(And in Illinois the cash booths are all closed right now, but it sounds like things are open in Florida?)

So sorry, I knew you said caravan, but my brain went directly to carpooling lol. I'm sure you are right about one at a time even though you can have multi tags registered.

Yes you can both go through cash lanes. They pay cash and your transponder will dinged at the cheaper sun-pass rate

https://www.cfxway.com/e-pass/get-e-pass/E Pass works on all FL toll roads and gives you the discount. A Mini sticker is free, just prepay $10 in tolls.

Thank you for this option. Good to know we could do this without a large investment.

Since it is just the Florida Turnpike part of the route we have to worry about, this may be the easiest for our situation. Thank you!

ETA: Also a small part of 429 is not covered, so maybe 3 tolls instead of 2. Still not a huge deal.

I will see what our friends would like to do. Thank you, everyone!
