Use old ticket credit then upgrade?

I have an old pre-2004 park hopper that is unused. I plan to use the credit toward the purchase of a new ticket when we arrive at WDW. (Can this be done at a hotel or only at the park?)

Once I have the new MYW ticket issued, can it be upgraded like any other MYW ticket at that point? E.g., if I initially use the credit to purchase a 7-day base ticket but then (within the 13 days) wish to upgrade to a hopper or to a 9-day, will this be a problem?

Sorry.

You can't "upgrade" a ticket issued prior to MYW, even after you have exchanged it for a
current ticket at a ticket booth or Guest Relations.

Thanks Robo. I've read the faq, but I'm not sure it really answers the question.

It says that an unused ticket can be used as a credit toward a new ticket. So, let's say I have a child's park hopper, which is completley unusued, that was purchased for $179 in 2004. As I read Chesire's faq, I could use the $179 credit toward the purchase of a new MYW ticket. (Let's say I used it toward a 7-day child MYW base, for $214, so I pay the difference of about $30 something.)

So, the point is that at that point, that is a non-upgradable MYW ticket? That's surprising to me. (Not saying I don't believe it, just that I'm surprised. It's not really explicit in Chesire's faq.)

You can't UPGRADE the ticket.

You can use it as-is, or you can "trade it in" for what you paid for it towards purchasing a new ticket.

An "upgrade" is different than a "trade-in."

Once you purchase a new ticket, yes, you CAN upgrade that new ticket.

(In many cases, the old ticket is worth far more used "as-is" than as a trade-in.
But that is also a judgement call based on how many days you have on the ticket, how many you need this trip, how many days you may need on a future trip, and the TYPE of ticket. In this case, it's a child's ticket.)

But, you could simply "trade in" the old ticket DIRECTLY on the exact ticket that you want to begin-with. All one transaction.

Sorry, Robo, I'm sure this is all clear, but I'm still confused.

I'm not looking to upgrade the initial (pre-MYW) ticket. I'm looking to use the value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new MYW ticket. The question is whether, once I've done that, I can later (assuming within the 13 days) upgrade the MYW ticket.

I don't want to pay for more of a ticket than I need. At the same time, I would like to have the flexibility to upgrade. So, to go back to my example -- I use the $179 value of the old ticket toward the purchase of a 7-day base MYW ticket. We don't currently want to park hop. So I don't way to pay for the park hopping option. But we might change our mind, for example, to try to hop over to see fantasmic on a day we did another park in the morning. In addition, our current plan is to have 7 park days. But perhaps we'll change our mind and decide on one of our pool days to hit EPCOT for dinner. So, now I need an 8 or 9 day ticket. The question is whether I will be able to do this.

Also, I understand that the old no expire 5-day hopper is probably most efficiently used as is. It's a bit of a bummer to trade in a ticket that would cost $300 today for $179. But it really doesn't do me any good. We don't go for just 5 days. Given how expensive a 2 or 3 day supplement would be, I just don't know when I'd ever be able to use the ticket as a 5-day hopper.

Once you purchase a new ticket (using the trade-in value of the old ticket's original price,) yes, you CAN upgrade that new ticket.

If you need to park hop on exactly one day then you can use one day off of the old hopper for that purpose while buying a new non-hopper for the rest of the vacation.

But you need to plan and plan way in advance. After you do this you will have 4 remaining days on the old hopper. If you don't need to repeat the procedure of using exactly one day to hop on another vacation, the 4 remaining days might be more difficult to use than 5 days.

I followed this thread because I am in the same pickle. I have an adult 2001 6 day park hopper plus with 3 park days left on it. I was going to purchase a package for 2 adults with 4 day park hoppers even though we are going to need 7 day park hopper tix. I was planning on upgrading one of the 4 day tix to 7 days once there and carry around this old park tix with the other 4 day tix on my room key but can I put the old tix on my room key with the 4 day tix?

You can only have ONE ticket "on" the room key-card at a time.

But, if you use up one ticket, you can usually have the resort concierge desk put the other ticket on the room card.

I wouldn't do that.

The difference in price between a 4 day hopper and a 7 day hopper is $10. So, you're using up 3 never expire admissions for the equivalent of $3 per admission. If you purchased a 3-day no expire park hopper right now, it would cost about $300.

Even if you think you have absolutely no other use for those old 3 days of admission, I wouldn't do this just on principle. Ten bucks is ten bucks, but I'd rather pay the $10 now and save that old 3 day hopper just in case you ever have a short trip.

I'm actually in the same boat -- I have an old 7-day hopper with one day left on it. It's virtually useless, because the incremental value on multi-day hoppers after 3 days is negligible. Still, I refuse to use it to save $3. Just seems wrong. I'd rather save it for some day when I might park hop and have it to do that, without having to pay the extra $55 to add hopping. Disney's MYW pricing system is really genius. Not only did they all but get rid of people buying new never-expire tickets (unless they are willing to pay for no expire), they also did a great job of rendering close to useless any old never-expire tickets except for the people who go for short trips or local folks that can make good use of one-day admissions.

A completely unused ticket of any sort has a dollar value equal to the price Disney sokld it for.

If the ticket is pre-MYW the dollar value may be used to purchase any current tickets sold by Disney (with the proviso that no change will be given), with the purchaser paying the difference between the value of the old tickets and the selling price of the tickets purchased (plus tax on the difference).

If the pre-MYW ticket has been used at all, it can only be used for park entries that remain on the ticket and it cannot be modified or upgraded in any way.

It may make sense, with an unused pre-MYW ticket to just use it, if you will not need to purchase any additional tickets for the current trip.
