I'm booking our air right now and I am just wondering should I fly under my maiden name or use my soon-to-be new married name. Marriage is at the end of August and trip is October 1st. Plenty of time to get a new driver's license right?? Can I book with my new married name and bring the marriage certificate along with my old driver's license as proof in case I can't get a new driver's license issued before the trip??

When we traveled for our Honeymoon (Sandals Dunns River) our travel agent recommended not chancing the drivers license thing so booked our air and things under my maiden name. That was even pre-9/11 with security being more extreme now I would not take the chance.

As long as you have ID for your new name it won't be a problem. You may have a hard time if you show up with your old ID and marriage license. It shouldn't take long to get a new license.

Why not hyphenate your name just for the ticketing purposes (this would allow you to use new or old ID)?

Though I realize sometimes situations in this day and age necessitate it (second or third marriage, or professional reasons, or many other possible reasons), I am not a proponent of hyphenating names, but to make sure you have no issues when flying, why not do it in this instance?

Just my experience flying out of Minneapolis:

The flight ticket name and address and drivers license name and address must match exactly. I had this problem on a flight; however, they had to call a supervisor to let me through because I had recently married. I had not had the opportunity to change it on my license but used my married name on my airline ticket.

If you have time before your trip, make sure they match exactly.

Have a great time!

NOOOOOOOO!!! Hyphenated names are the biggest pains in the butt for airline computers. Sometimes you had to use the maiden name for the middle name, eliminating the middle initial, which cause the id to not match the ticket, etc. Hyphenated names are like nails on a chalk board for res agents.

The old ID and a marriage certificate will work just fine, but I recommended just making the res under the maiden name.

We can speculate all we want, but with security as it is you need to contact the airline and make sure you get the name and title of everyone you speak with. This is a CYA tactic that has never failed me in the past! ;)

Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your upcoming wedding! :wizard:

Ok mystery solved..for now.

I called BOTH the DMV AND social security offices today. Apparently you need an updated social security card to change you driver's license in NC. SS people say it takes 7-10 days to recieve updated card with new name. DMV says once I have that they can print me a new license right then and there. Since there is about 5 weeks between the wedding and the honeymoon I should have no problem booking under my new married name (which I just did!!)

Alternately, I called Delta directly and asked about the situation and was told if I present a VALID driver's ID along with the valid marriage license, that will be fine.

So either way, my butt is covered! I would naturally prefer to flaunt my new last name in all it's glory! Heheheheee! Can you tell I'm excited to be getting married?
