Keep in mind that the one-time-use points can be combined with your points. Even though they cost more per point than typical rental costs, it may still be the cheaper way to go if you only need a few points.
When renting points, there are two ways to do it. The most common way is for the other member to book a reservation in your name using their points. In this case, you would need to rent the exact number of points needed for the nights being booked for you by that member. For example, if the room was 14 points, you would have to rent all 14 points from the other member. Each night of your stay would have to be booked either on the reservation you make with your points, or the reservation being made by the other member. You can't mix some of your points and some of theirs for any given night. In the end, you have a separate reservation number for the night(s) booked by the other member and the night(s) you booked with your points. You can link the two reservations to avoid having to check out and back in, though.
The other way to rent points is to have the other member transfer the points from their account to yours, and then you make the reservation yourself. In this case, if the room is 14 points per night and you need an extra 7 points to complete the reservation, you'd need to find someone willing to transfer you 7 points. You could then use these points and your points all as part of the same reservation. The problem with this type of rental is that each member is only able to perform one transfer per use year. (You can send points to someone else, or you can receive points from someone else. Either one uses up your one transfer for the year.) You'd have to find a member who doesn't mind giving up their one annual transfer to send you such a small number of points. This is VERY hard to find.
