I am looking renting a few points from another member vs using 1 time use points from disney since it seems cheaper...

Alot of the postings say must be used by such and such a date. Does this mean that the points need to be tied into a reservation by that date or the actual vacation needs to be taken by that date?

That would be travel dates, I would guess. There's no stipulation on when you book - you can book up until the end of your use year, given availability. But the end of your use year would be the point where the points would have to be used (unless they were banked forward to the next year).

Keep in mind that rented points can only be used for a full nights reservation - you can't use a few rented ones to fill in a shortage for part of a night. Disney's points work well for that - I had to rent 1 point from Disney to complete our Easter vacation for next year.

It means the actual vacation must be completed on or before that date. The points expire on the date listed.

For example, if the post says use by March 1, the points are from a March use year and the last night that can be paid for by those points would be February 28 (or 29 if a leap year). Check out must be on or before March 1.

Sounds like you really need a transfer of points.

Keep in mind that the one-time-use points can be combined with your points. Even though they cost more per point than typical rental costs, it may still be the cheaper way to go if you only need a few points.

When renting points, there are two ways to do it. The most common way is for the other member to book a reservation in your name using their points. In this case, you would need to rent the exact number of points needed for the nights being booked for you by that member. For example, if the room was 14 points, you would have to rent all 14 points from the other member. Each night of your stay would have to be booked either on the reservation you make with your points, or the reservation being made by the other member. You can't mix some of your points and some of theirs for any given night. In the end, you have a separate reservation number for the night(s) booked by the other member and the night(s) you booked with your points. You can link the two reservations to avoid having to check out and back in, though.

The other way to rent points is to have the other member transfer the points from their account to yours, and then you make the reservation yourself. In this case, if the room is 14 points per night and you need an extra 7 points to complete the reservation, you'd need to find someone willing to transfer you 7 points. You could then use these points and your points all as part of the same reservation. The problem with this type of rental is that each member is only able to perform one transfer per use year. (You can send points to someone else, or you can receive points from someone else. Either one uses up your one transfer for the year.) You'd have to find a member who doesn't mind giving up their one annual transfer to send you such a small number of points. This is VERY hard to find.
