Use at other places

Are points used at other places (outside WDW) a valuable option for DVC points?

Thinking of the off year where we might want to go to Hilton ahead, Vera Beach etc.

Do you all use your points for places outside WDW? Thanks!

Lots of people on these boards spend a lot of points on these places. They don't appeal to me, so I never have.

The only time I used my points for this is I put a local friend at Vero for two nights, and they said they didn't want to go back. To be fair, they are a little wild and don't have kids.

To determine "value" find cash value and decide whether that's worth it for your points. Unlike at WDW, these properties have a ton of similar competing, maybe even better resorts. Maybe it's better to use Redweek and book a week at another brand, or just book with cash.

HH is hard to get into the summer unless you are an owner there.

VB is generally easy to get into at all times of the year.

Have not been to HHI, but have been to VB and really enjoy it. But it is sleepy. For my vacations that I just want to sit on the beach, have a cocktail, go to dinner at the restaurant and be left alone, it is an ideal trip. Other people I know would find a trip like that anything but ideal.

Don't see the point you likely can get a nicer place for equal price without a huge down payment.

DVC only makes sense because no one else sells rooms almost attached to the parks.

In this case (assuming you were not going to use your points otherwise) you would suggest renting out your unused points for that year and using those proceeds to book elsewhere with cash?

Correct I would rent or just bank/borrow the points to another time.

Example going almost 3 weeks this summer and won't be back for another 20-24 months to WDW likely.

Got it. Kind of torn whether to go with direct or resale. Feel like my FOMO Is pushing me toward direct.

We bought a membership to our local zoo. We’ll never go enough to pay for it. But there’s some dumb perks that don’t remotely pay for themselves and we really like being zoo members so dang it if we aren’t members now. It was a purchase we made emotionally. I’m totally good with it, it was an amount of money I could afford.

I think that’s kind of like buying direct. With what they’ve done to APs it’s almost completely unjustifiable financially now. But what you call FOMO I’m going to call wanting a thing. It’s OK to want things! As long as you aren’t deluding yourself into thinking it’s a financially prudent option, it’s no different than buying a Lexus when a Toyota would do just fine (or a Toyota when a Hyundai would do)
