USAirways - increasing bag fees again

It is important to look at the entire price, fare plus baggage fees, and compare it to your alternatives, and how much getting to where you want to go is worth to you. That's the only way to determine whether or not the baggage fees are reasonable or not. For many people, in many cases, even with this higher baggage fee, US Airways remains the very best option.

USAir is a RIPOFF!!!

Charging for bags is a RIPOFF!!!

How airlines are getting away with this is sickening............:headache:

Whats next charging for breathing air, pay per using their light, cleaning fee, Southwest does NOT charge for bags and they are continually lower then USAir. Shame you US airlines charging for bags.............

Charging for bags...........................

The majority of American leisure travellers (and certainly many of the posters here) are unwilling to pay viable fares for air travel. The airlines have to make up their losses in some fashion, as raising fares doesn't work.

And SW does not always have the lowest fares - they have just done a remarkable job of convincing some people not to even consider other carriers.

Until passengers stop expecting cross country fares of $200 or less and are willing to pay the true cost of travelling, I have no issue at all with airlines charging these fees.

If your choice was to pay $750 for a cross country flight with 2 free checked bags, or $300 for a cross country flight with a $20 bag fee, I know which the majority would choose.

Ryanair talked about installing pay toilets.

PP has it correct. US passengers seem to prefer "unbundled" pricing. A lower base fare but a charge to check a bag. Passengers aren't willing to pay a profitable fare but are willing to accept charges for checked bags.

A few years ago SW let passengers check 3 70lb bags without paying extra. It's now down to 2 50lb bags. SW cut back on limits.

I just add the cost to check one bag when I'm comparing fares.

When I went to WDW in June, SW was consistently $350 to $400 roundtrip for PIT-MCO. Hardly a low fare. I had some rapid reward credits in my account and added some converted from hotel points to get a free ticket instead. I didn't check prices on other airlines because I wanted a non-stop. Since US left the PIT market, SW has jacked up their prices.

Exhortations are amusing, but not much else. Is there anything substantive underlying your accusation, or are you just frustrated?

I wonder how long before an airline decides to treat checked luggage as cargo. The charge will be based on weight and distance of the flight.

True. The airline I fly doesn't charge for baggage - but I'm paying almost $800 (Canadian) to fly about 1100 miles. On the other hand, I'm also paying about $800 (Canadian) to fly 9300 miles on the same airline. Okay, to be strictly accurate, work is paying $800 for both these trips.

I suspect many Americans (and most posters here) would have a heart attack at those fares.

I'm paying $2,000 out of my own pocket to sit in 31 inch seat pitch next week, in Economy.

And I paid $900 plus $350 to upgrade last week on a route about as long as Debbie's example (And Debbie, I suspect that most posters here wouldn't pay that premium for a non-stop flight)

Those fares are the norm for legacy carriers outside the US, unless one is flying domestically in a country like China where fares are regulated.

I wouldn't have paid a premium for it ($350-$400, no way!) but the option to use rapid rewards for a non-stop seemed like a good idea so I didn't price other airlines. I got a couple reward points from Hyatt and a few from Hilton to get what I needed. I typically stay DVC so I really don't need hotel points. Both flights were totally full, so people must have paid it, the price was high from day 1.

Ok should have said USAir stinks................

Well since you asked, yea......................:)

In being forced in using them, business trips, for 11 mths and having flight times continually changed w/o notice, gate changes at the last minute, at least 5 trips I can count that had “maintenance issues” with everything from tire air pressure, gyroscope issues, overhead storage door that would not shut then had the maintenance man super glue it shut so we could leave, then at arrival had to have the door pried open with a screwdriver so baggage could be retrieved!!! Shall I go on as I have plenty of more issues. I will NEVER use Hooterville Airlines, erh…………….USAir again!! :sad2:

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

PLEASE DONT GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS!!!!!

Why not just say that life stinks?

Well since you asked, yea......................:)
None of what you wrote sound unique to US Airways. Perhaps you haven't flown many other airlines very often, because I could relay experiences much worse than what you've outlined, with several other airlines I flew quite a lot over the last few decades.

We just booked USAir for a Nov 27-30 trip to WDW from Charlotte, which is more convenient to us than Raleigh (SW doesn't fly out of CLT). The fare was in line with anything we saw for SW, and I don't have time to pray for DINGs.

The thing that ticked me off was we booked the 7:45am flight down to MCO. The NEXT DAY they had cancelled that flight and re-booked us on the 9:30am flight! What really stinks is the 7:45 flight is still scheduled for all the days around our day. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT 2 HOURS DID TO MY TOURING STRATEGY?!?!?!!:headache:

Not true in our area. Last time we flew it was almost $100/pp less to fly US Air, even adding in the baggage fees, than it was to fly on SW.

Ugh, yea....................

It was my experience with them you asked, quit trying to make something out of nothing, what you work for Hooterville Air, erh……….USAir??

Try again....................;)

GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Since it took US Scareways 4 1/2 hours to get my bags off the plane 2 days before Christmas...I will never fly them again.

And to think, I was lucky. Some people never got their bags.

It was my experience with them you asked
No I didn't ask.

quit trying to make something out of nothing
Rather, I'm making practically nothing out of what you've said.

what you work for Hooterville Air, erh……….USAir??
Not at all. I just think your comments are missing the point that US Airways is not much different than most of the rest of the airlines. You're frustrated and upset with them, perhaps, now, but switch to another airiline, and you can have the chance to be frustrated and upset with them too.
