I even live in a housing area which used to be American until the Wall fell and American troop strength was downsized considerably.

If you don't mind me asking, where do you live?

My father was in the US Army and we lived in Germany for three years in the 1970s. Two different places .. a base near Buren and a base near Pirmasens. Buren was more rural and I remember seeing farmers shepherd livestock nearby; the housing in Pirmasens, IIRC, butted up with the city and I remember talking to some of the local kids at times.

I don't speak for everyone in the US, but to me the simple offers of assistance mean a great deal.

We have lots of initiatives over here collecting money for the victims (I also started one in my company).
We already sent a recon-team of our Technisches Hilfswerk. This a federal service comparable to your Army Engineering Corps. They're specialists in building bridges, repairing dikes, setting up water purification plants, repairing infrastructure. Right now they're assessing the damage to decide which units to be sent. These people also stayed for many weeks in the areas affected by the Tsunami, worked in quake-regions all over the world, etc.

I live in Frankfurt. American presence here has been considerably reduced. We still have the AirBase in the southern portion of Frankfurt International Airport, but even that will be closed very soon and all the activities transferred to Ramstein Air Base.

There is just ONE Europe - even though Rumsy thinks different And Bush doesn't even know where Europe is
And there should be just ONE world - And we see from the reactions after the Tsunami and after Katrina that we're a step closer to this.
