US school holiday dates

does anyone know when the US breaks up for summer and then returns to school?

Generally speaking, the US summer break is mid-June to mid-August (and thus this is when WDW will be at its busiest), but there are variations between States, school districts and even schools within the same district.

alot of the American parents I spoke to while at WDW kids went back the day after Labor day on the 4th september.

This year for the local schools (to WDW) the summer holiday dates where: May 21st to Aug 6th. The best time to go is the secound week in Sept as then both US and UK schools are back, but the parks then close earlier!!!

We stayed at Pop 17/8 - 31/8 and during our first week there were more US children about. I work in a UK school, so can't have time out - we went for the last 2 weeks of our holiday and was worried about queues, but Disney had it down to a T and we did not queue for anything for more that 30 mins, don't forget the fast passes - plan out what to fast pass and when and you'll be laughing. Universal is a different matter - we object to having to pay extra for fast passes and some of the lines were long - we did get a bonus during a bad storm though as the rides were closed and lots of people left, being British we sat it out and when the rides reopened we did 10 in one hour!

Over on the west coast, most schools are closed from the beginning/middle of June (approx 10th) to the middle of August (21st usually).

A US DISser's DS is going back to school August 18th 2008, she lives in Florida. We went 13th to 27th August this year and the second week was much quieter

Do they have any termly (or semesterly!) holidays in March/April or October like we do over here?

They do not have a break for halloween like the UK, as they have one for Thanksgiving (last Thursday in November), but they do have a break in April, this year it was 2nd to the
9th. (This information is for school in the district of Osceola).

Many schools have 1 week off for Thanksgiving (mostly NE states I think), some just have 2-3 days. Spring Breaks range from the last 2 weeks in Feb to the last week in April (end of March, beginning of April and 2 weeks around Easter are the busiest). Summer Breaks range from end May-beginning of August (mostly Southern States) to end June-after Labor Day (Northern States). The general trend is school is starting later (some states have passed laws requiring school to start closer to, or after, Labor Day). The peark summer period (when most schools are off) is mid-June to mid-August. Remember that breaks change from state to state, county to county, and district to district.
