US Restricts Electronic Devices On Planes

So do you have to show it working before you fly out and also once you land? So for me personally I show all devices working at Security in Glasgow and also show it working in Orlando at Security as well?

:confused3

Heathrow are checking devices at security AND at the boarding gates? That'll take ages (I normally have phone, tablet, iPod and Kindle with me!!)

I wonder how Gatwick are applying the rules...

To be honest who puts their chargers in their hold luggage? Also I think you will be asked to show the item works at the gate not at security as it is only US flights that are going to be subject to such scrutiny and to check everyone at security to see where they are flying will cause too much congestion. Just means getting to the gate earlier I guess.

After BA lost my case on holiday in Morocco several years ago - took 7 days to get to me, I always carry at least my mobile charger in my hand luggage. I spent a lot of time on my phone to BA trying to sort out the mess and eventually my battery ran flat and I had no way to charge it which was awful.

In fact, I am so scarred by the incident that I now pack all our clothes across our 3 or 4 cases, so that if one was lost, we'd have enough to get by until it turned up :rolleyes2. And, I pack all essentials (where allowed) in hand luggage. Obviously not an issue in somewhere like Florida where you can replace a lot of things i.e. toiletries/clothing, but I was in a remote part of Morocco without so much as a hairbrush or toothbrush!

Some people's phone and tablet batteries run down very quickly if conditioned. Where are they going to charge these things in an airport?

that's one of the basics of safe packing.
Never put all your eggs in the same basket, as the saying goes.

let this be an advice for rookie travellers.

More and more people use powerbanks. Those are tiny devices ( 4" long sticks for example) which can fully recharge once or more times a smartphone, tablet, or camera.
This enables people to recharge a device without having access to a power outlet.

just an example below :

Yes, I was thinking of purchasing a power bank for use on the airplane, more than for anything else :thumbsup2.

As for packing in one case, I had no choice at the time, there was only my case! My DH (was DBF at time) met me at the airport from somewhere else far off, so I had no way of packing items in his case. But yes, now we have multiple cases and travel together, it's not an issue ::yes::.

If they decide to search us they will have fun - we will have 4 phones, 5 iPads, 2 laptops and a iPod touch between 3 of us :rolleyes1

Flying BA out of Gatwick on Thursday so I will update after :thumbsup2

I asked this question before but still not sure of the answer, if you put a gadget in your case for the hold, will security need to open your case and turn it on and off to check there?

Your device will show on x-ray.
Given the reinforced security measures, it would be highly illogical if they didn't at least "test" your gadget, at least for trace amount of explosives.

I rhink we can be pretty sure that devices in the hold will be searched, and probably be subjet to the same rule as devices in carry on.
If they were not, then it would be rather scary

but we can never be too sure.

Anyhow, it depends what you call a "gadget". If it's a luggage scale, then I don't think it poses a "threat". If it's a laptop, then the real "risk" is having it in the hold in the first place.

I'm all for it i will just need to make sure the kids know not the run down their tablets/phones.

My only problem is I usually take my really old notebook (just incase I lose it or it breaks etc) but it will not switch on without being plugged in (battery knackered) so I am now going to have to decide whether to take my better laptop or just not to bother. I usually take it to back up all my photos

I would wrap up the net book in your clothes and put it in your hold luggage. Who knows what announcements will be made tomorrow or next week/month but I would go on what your departure airport advises and your airline.

I used my tablet on my last transatlantic flight (IFE not working, thanks VA ) and it lasted the whole way home with plenty of battery to spare. Screen brightness turned down, all other apps closed, bluetooth and wifi off, no problems. :thumbsup2

People did travel to the US before tablets, netbooks, kindles, gameboys, phones - and no one ever died of boredom. Books, decks of cards and a power nap have served me very well over the years :lmao:

somehow the atlantic seems have gotten wider over the years - the flight just seems to get longer and longer....movies, ipads, kindles, whatever....it's not easy....(my flight is 13 hours non-stop, so perhaps a tad worse than from the UK - but it's all long...the US is far away....far far far away...)
