According to Simon Calder on the afternoon news it is only on flights into the US and not flights leaving the US![]()
To be honest who puts their chargers in their hold luggage? Also I think you will be asked to show the item works at the gate not at security as it is only US flights that are going to be subject to such scrutiny and to check everyone at security to see where they are flying will cause too much congestion. Just means getting to the gate earlier I guess.
In fact, I am so scarred by the incident that I now pack all our clothes across our 3 or 4 cases, so that if one was lost, we'd have enough to get by until it turned up
Some people's phone and tablet batteries run down very quickly if conditioned. Where are they going to charge these things in an airport?
that's one of the basics of safe packing.
Never put all your eggs in the same basket, as the saying goes.
let this be an advice for rookie travellers.
More and more people use powerbanks. Those are tiny devices ( 4" long sticks for example) which can fully recharge once or more times a smartphone, tablet, or camera.
This enables people to recharge a device without having access to a power outlet.
just an example below :

Heathrow are checking devices at security AND at the boarding gates? That'll take ages (I normally have phone, tablet, iPod and Kindle with me!!)
I wonder how Gatwick are applying the rules...
Flying BA out of Gatwick on Thursday so I will update after![]()
I asked this question before but still not sure of the answer, if you put a gadget in your case for the hold, will security need to open your case and turn it on and off to check there?
I'm all for it i will just need to make sure the kids know not the run down their tablets/phones. My only problem is I usually take my really old notebook (just incase I lose it or it breaks etc) but it will not switch on without being plugged in (battery knackered) so I am now going to have to decide whether to take my better laptop or just not to bother. I usually take it to back up all my photos
I used my tablet on my last transatlantic flight (IFE not working, thanks VA) and it lasted the whole way home with plenty of battery to spare. Screen brightness turned down, all other apps closed, bluetooth and wifi off, no problems.
People did travel to the US before tablets, netbooks, kindles, gameboys, phones - and no one ever died of boredom. Books, decks of cards and a power nap have served me very well over the years![]()
somehow the atlantic seems have gotten wider over the years
