US Airways carry on policy

I'm flying US Airways in a week from LAX (my return flight after a weekend jaunt to DL!). Their website says that I can have 1 carry on and 1 personal item. While they have the dimensions allowed for a carry on, it only says a personal item can include a purse, briefcase or laptop bag.

Does anybody know what dimensions they actually use for allowing the personal item? I have a KATA backpack for my camera and would like that to be my personal item. However, I also have a messenger bag that I can use for my camera and it looks like a laptop bag. The backpack is waaaay more comfortable to carry in Disneyland though...

It's only a weekend trip so I'm loathe to check any luggage.

I believe the rule is that the personal item must stow away under the seat in front of you - am I correct?

You are correct. It must fit completely under the seat in front of you - not even any straps, handles, wheels, etc., intruding into the "feet" area.

As long as the backpack fits under the seat in front of you, you shouldn't have any issues. We flew US Air in April and brought on a small carry-on suitcase and small backpack each and no one said anything.

I flew w/ them last week, and just FYI in case you do end up checking a bag, it is cheaper to pay the checked bag fee online than to wait until you're at the airport and pay there.

But hopefully you can just carry it all on!

Okay! Good to know. Both my camera backpacks (ugh, don't ask me how many camera bags I actually have), fit under the seat completely ... even in those small little Dash 8's. I'll bring the smaller one anyway.
