Announcing New Zone Boarding

http://www.usairways.com/dividendmiles/zone_boarding.htm

US Airways year-to-date arrival performance ranked first among the network carriers as of June 2004. As part of our continuous effort to meet and exceed our goals in this area we are adopting a new aircraft boarding process. Effective September 1, 2004, all flights on US Airways and the US Airways Express carriers will be boarded by zone. US Airways Shuttle flights between Washington Reagan National, Boston Logan and New York LaGuardia Airports will not be affected by this change.

Song has done this for a while now; rear or front (in Songs case) aircraft window first, then middle, then aisle. You can be traveling with a party as few as two and have 2 different zones (ie. window seats board before middle or aisle). Not to fret I always put the boarding pass for the called zone on top. To be honest, it does seem to work ....and there is always ample room in the overhead bins.

Oooouh, will this help them not declare bankruptcy and leave Philly along with my 40,000 miles

Safetymom- Thanks I'll look into it. I just hate for Philly to lose USair. I've always enjoyed flying with them. I'm hoping for the best. :D

Philly is a battle ground between Southwest and USAirways. Usually where Southwest goes they win the airport. It happened in Baltimore that way.

That's a great link, Safetymom. I wish ATA would join in before they go under! Between my husband and I, we have points for something like 9 free companion tickets. We'll never squeeze those in if they go bankrupt in the first quarter of next year.

I'm another one with over 40,000 USAir points. But I'm really hoping to use them in February for a first class upgrade on our trip to LA. There's nothing nicer than first class on a long trip. Here's hoping USAir sticks around.

safetymom:
the link you posted takes me to a usairways message saying that the page no longer exists or has moved. I search the usairways website but can find nothing on zone boarding.

Do you have any specific information on how they intend to board planes after 9/1? (i.e. windows first, then center, then aisle; or zones of several rows each). Thanks for the consistently good info you provide here.

Uh, never mind. Just found it right on usairway's home page, lower left. Duh. Thanks.

So what do they do if you are traveling with children? Expect the child to board at a different time than the parent? Duh. What about their elite fliers? Will they now not be able to preboard?

If people would not bring on everything they own and just go to their seats and sit down, it should take more than 15 minutes to board a full 757. Instead they roam around, spend 20 minutes trying to stow too much stuff, and are generally inconsiderate boors.

No need to worry. Companions board with the elite member.

First
Chairman and Gold
Silver and US Visa Card holder

then the back of the plane. I haven't seen it spelled out exactly how they plan to do that.

Are you flying into MCO this weekend? Stay safe.

If you are asking if I'm flying in, no, worse...driving.

The original plan was to arrive about noon on Sunday. Right. That plan was changed, and we're now supposed to arrive noon on Saturday. Now rethinking that and talking about driving straight through to arrive Friday night.

We want to beat the storm. I'd rather wait it out at our house or in a hotel room than try to drive through it or get stuck in the Carolina's. Can't cancel, would cost us many, amny thousands due to the moving truck, deliveries, etc. Prepared as much as possible, we bought plywood up here that will be taken down there, as well as heavy plastic tarps, a waterproof safe, first aid kit, twenty gallons of water, some canned goods, bread, etc. Tried to think of anything that would be sold out down there and bought it here.

We don't have to worry about flooding, but winds are always a worry.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Anne
