URGENT!! NO Hand baggage allowed today

why are you scared?
The flights will be the safest way to travle in the next few weeks, with the security in place.
You will have more chance of a terrorist trying to kill you on the trains, underground, boats, even in tunnels than get to you on a highly secured airport/aircraft.
:thumbsup2

Oh dont say that Obi. I am going to DLP on Monday and we are going by ferry. I already dreading the ferry in case I am sea sick now I have to worry about terrorists oh my I will be a wreck  :worried:

Hello Everyone, I organise flights for my company and we have recived the following info:

1: Heathrow Airport is now closed to all incoming flights except those flights already in the air.

2: All cabin baggage must now be checked-in for all flights departing the UK with immediate effect. This includes laptop bags and their contents as well as books, newspapers, suit bags mobile phones, and any duty free.
Only travel documents, keys (without electronic hobs), prescription medication and food for infants will be permitted on board and will be re-packed in transparent plastic bags.

It is believed that there will be more personal searches.

A second search is being carried out for UK-USA flights as this is where the main threat is supposed to be.

3: In light of the current security situation with aeroplane travellers not being able to carry hand baggage on to the plane.

I hope this helps?

I was so shocked when I watched the news this morning, its just so awful that this is happening. :sad2:

Clear plastic bags do not bother one little bit and if everyone knows I am on my period hey at least you know if I am shouting or screaming at my dh you will know it will be PMT. So stay away :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao:

Honestly I really do not mind at all and funnily enough I thought why have we not used clear bags since 9/11 I watched a documentary am I wrong in remembering that each plane had a suicide bomber they put the bomb together in the toilet. Hence why we can not take certain things on board now. I am just thinking why have we not had this in place. Personally I did not give it a thought, but it makes sense. Anthing to be safe and these days most flights has seat back TV's at least Virgin does and I have never been bored on Virgin.

AP now saying that it was three US airlines which were being targetted, United Continental and American.

Thanks for the update.

Its just so sad to wake up to this awful news. I feel so sorry for everyone at the airports today, but it did say on GMTV that everyone was being really understanding about the whole thing which is nice to hear.

Just heard from BBC news special that ALL flights in AND out of Gatwick have been cancelled. Waiting to hear from Home Office, head of Transport, and head of Anti Terrorist Unit - due any second. Will post if anything significant.

Thought it quite funny that the reporter outside Heathrow held up the clear plastic bag that everyone has been given to put their belongings in - it was a B&Q bag. Free publicity ;)

Oh update - The reporter from Gatwick just come back on saying they got the wrong info. Apparently it's just Easyjet that has cancelled all in and outbound flights, not all flights.

The other posters are right - now will be the safest time to fly!

The stupid thing is that there always has to be something happen before security gets taken seriously - some of those measures should have been in place since Sept 11th. Maybe not the clear plastic bags but there should certainly be a bigger limit on how much hand luggage people can take!

totally agree Michelle. :grouphug: to anyone travelling soon. Like others have said with all the additional security it is probably the safest time to travel. Hope the delays are not too bad and you have a wonderful holiday

I completely agree with you, life is too short! We cant let these terrorists ruin our lives! I was in NYC on sept 11th and on the london underground 7/7 (maybe someones trying to tell me something too  ) and yes it scared the hell out of me but then i though - that is exactly what they want - im not going to spend my life avoiding the things i love because of a minority of people think they have the right to scare everybody.

Frightening times indeed. We have to trust our security services to weed out these scum but I cant help but recall the words of the IRA after Brighton. We only need to get lucky once. You have to be lucky all the time.

Think that MI5 and the other intelligence/security agencies need some congratulations for this. Assuming they have foiled the plot (and I pray that they have), that is a great piece of work. As you say, you cannot deter terrorists with punishments... you have to prevent them from doing it in the first place.

Re tampons, aircract ones probably don't work too well (unlike t-shirts, one size does not fit all... ). However Tampax Compact are really quite small, discreet and packaged in a pretty way. I honestly don't think that there is anything to be embarrassed about having your period - having a period is a fact of life and we wouldn't be able to reproduce if we didn't :confused3

Like others, "valuables" are my only concern - laptops, cameras, i-pod, jewellery. It sounds as though, from what Obi said, the airlines are doing their best to check these in seperately. If this turns into a longer term thing, hopefully airlines and insurance companies will come up with an official line on this (to help make packing and/or deciding what to leave at home easier...).

The secondary screening makes sense. They did that (and maybe still do) in Australia after the Bali bombings. When I went through, they did a really quite thorough search of everyone's hand luggage just before entering the gate. You do have to allow extra time to get onto the plane...

Am just so glad to be reading news of cancellations, delays and new security measures... and NOT of plane crashes and death.

Hope that the airlines are able to look after people stranded away from home.

Best Wishes,
Boo

That was in 1984 and I should think intelligence gathering is much more sophisticated and accurate these days - at least I would like to think it is.

we fly to Spain on Sat (unless delayed or canx!!!), with 3 kids but flight is only a couple of hours so should be ok with bear essentials...

question -dh wants to take his mobile sim card in his wallet (and pack mobile in suitcase) do you think he will be ok with that...

and also if we buy things in duty free like snacks for the kids, maybe some colouring books and pencils can we take them on the flight???

thanks
Nat

I think the higher the security the better and safer it is to be flying, especially over the next few days. If we were flying over the next few days I would feel more comfortable with the highest level of security and be more than happy to undergo the extra inconvienience involved if it keeps people safe. All I can think is thankfully it has been found now, preventing 100's of people being killed. :(
