After getting over the shock of the prices, I now have 2 cabins on hold on a 7 night Alaskan cruise for May next year. A category 9a on deck 6 (6518) and a category 11a (6045). We had a category 9a on a previous cruise on the Magic and it was lovely, however the difference in cost is £700. Is it worth it or will the inside cabin be fine, given that we will be enjoying the scenery from on deck?

Thanks

Jo

my mom enjoyed seeing the ocean from her window and even saw dolphins swimming. There are plenty of places to see from on deck, and with an OV, you won't just sit in your cabin and look out, unlike a balcony, where you could sit for a few hours. It's more gettting a glipse here and there while you happen to be in your cabin. I need the OV as it helps with seasick. We never splurge for the balcony, as we just go upstairs somewhere to sit and view. Also, deck 2 9B and 9C OV are usually less than 9A. I would price out those, as well. We went with 2 9Cs.

For me, personally, I need that natural light. But, it's really your call. Yes, it's best to be up on deck for the scenic cruising, and not in your room, IMO.

It's really up to your comfort level whether you opt for the oceanview or inside room.

For me, I would want a window or verandah on an Alaskan cruise. If it was the Bahamas or Caribbean it would be another story.

I agree with PrincessShmoo - it depends on YOUR comfort level though. Either way I am sure you'll have a great time!

I really hate to give out my secret - but cat 9b are the best deals on the ship. Outside room with huge porthole. Deck 2 (ok some people will look down their noses at you ... "oh!! you are staying doooown there ... ugh!!" ) but don't let them get to you. Great location. and for 2 adults about $700 USD / 500 GBP less expensive on 22-May or $560 usd / 400 gbp less on 27-May between the cat 9A and cat 9B. We Live on deck 2 when we cruise on all of the DCL ships.

on the classic ships (Wonder/Magic) you are "close" to the water. It's great to watch the ocean from your room for the short times that you are there. only 2 flights of stairs up to the giant veranda that is deck 4. It's a slog up to deck 9 (the older I get that is) but I get to eat more desserts that way :teeth:)

So my recommendation is to get a totally different room / category than what you have priced.

Good Luck and Have Fun

is there much of a difference between the size of deck 2 9B and 9C windows?

The windows mid ship (mostly the 9B rooms) are a little larger than the windows forward and aft (9C).
You can sort of see the difference here (deck 2 is the porthole on the bottom). The smaller windows on the right are 9Cs and starting at the 8th window they are a little larger (9Bs).

13 cruises on the classics and I never noticed the difference in port hole size on deck 2. Thanks for pointing that out.

We cruised in an inside cabin to Norway last year and found that we really missed having a window for that cruise. Because of the colder weather we were less likely to sit out on deck for such long times. I love deck 4 for example to sit and read, but it was closed due to high winds for the first two days and would not have been comfortable, even with a blanket. Inside most of the areas where you can sit tend to have a lot of noisy activities going on. Of course, as an adult you would have the Outlook Cafe on the Wonder which we really missed on the Magic. But after the cruise I was thinking that for any cold weather cruise I should really consider getting a window as that would make sitting in the stateroom much more pleasant! However, in general I am of the strong believe that only you know if it is worth it for you. I normally tend to go with the cheapest option and rather use the money saved for something else fun. But everyone is different with regard to their priorities.
