I've had a dog for 3 years...it had to happen sometime...she got sprayed :scared1: However, it wasn't a direct hit. The skunk sprayed in the opposite direction but she got the smell, but not nearly as bad as it could be. But I need some advice on how to get the smell off of her and out of the house. I don't think the smell is on me. At least I can't smell it when I'm not in the same room as her. My clothes are already in the washing machine and I've showered. We washed her with shampoo(unfortunately in one of our two bathrooms....we didn't want to stick around outside; the skunk was in the next yard) and we used the vinegar and baking soda solution...but not a lot. We ran out of vinegar :headache: Any advice would be much appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and preferably dawn dishwashing detergent in warm water and scrub it in to her. Rinse and repeat a couple of times. Then in the morning go get some Nature's Miracle Skunk odor remover and use that on her and anything that stinks.

We had this happen early in the summer and one of our labs got a direct hit in the face. It tooks months for the smell to go entirely but with the above methods it was much better in a day or so.

Good luck, it is a HORRIBLE smell!:scared1:

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, I washed and washed the poor dog as best as I could, it was of course around this same time as this post when it happened to him. Anyways what the previous poster said is the best you can do as my Vet told me after the fact but it was to late for me as I already bathed him as you did. I live here in Canada and bought this product called Petrotech De-Skunk from a pet store. It is an American company so I'm sure you will be able to get it if your in the States. It worked wonders. I had to use it a couple of times but I recommend it to anyone. My dog smells great now but I do find even though it has been a couple of months when he is wet in the area he was sprayed (he was direct hit:headache:) he has the skunk smell a bit. I guess it takes a while to leave totally. Good luck to you and your pooch. :thumbsup2
www.sea-yu.com is the web site on the can it that helps

I thought Tomato juice was the remedy.

Tomato Juice didn't work at all just made a huge mess when the dog decides to shake and it goes all over the place. Looks like a horror movie set :scared1:

Thanks guys! But unfortunately we don't have any peroxide :headache: But luckily she didn't take a direct hit, I don't even think she got any of the actual spray on her. So the smell isn't too terrible. My crazy mother is letting her sit on the couch right next to her :scared1: My mom said she can't smell it anymore. I have an abnormally good nose so I smell it...I just really hope the smell doesn't stick to me. I don't want to be known as "skunk girl" for the rest of my junior year of high school  But I can't smell it when I'm not in the same room as the dog so hopefully that means it's not on me.

This happened to our cat a few years ago too. Not a direct hit, but still stinky. It was gone the next day :confused3 I'm really hoping the same thing happens with our dog

UPDATE! It's only been about an hour since I started the thread but luckily...most of the smell is off her! We immediately shampooed her and then used the vinegar and baking soda mix...I thought she still smelled but that was when she was in the room where the door is(the family room) so that's the first room she was in after Mr. Stinky got her. She just went into my mom's room(My mom allowed this...she's nuts ) and I went over very cautiously to investigate...I couldn't smell it until I was about 6 inches from her head! It's almost completely gone! But the family room smells horrible. We'll work on that tomorrow. But at least she won't be stinking up the rest of the house too much! :)

I thought Tomato juice was the remedy.

All tomato juice does is gives you a dog that smells like skunk and tomato juice. :rotfl:

The peroxide mixture works for other pet smells as well.

Following is from Wikipedia. They note that MythBusters has discredited the Tomato Juice suggestion.

You can forget about tomato juice. The most effective formula has proven to be chemist Paul Krebaum's.[1] He published it in "Chemical and Engineering News" in its October 1993 issue. You can also find it in Popular Science's August 2007 issue. Here is his recipe for the bathing concoction:

* One quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
* one quarter cup of baking soda
* one teaspoon of liquid hand soap (not detergent)

Bathe your pet in this solution and rinse with warm tap water. Krebaum warned that there is no way to store this potion. "If you put the ingredients in a bottle, the whole thing would explode."[2]

The thiols, which are responsible for the odor, are not water soluble, even with soap, but the baking soda catalyzes the oxidative ability of the peroxide, which oxidizes the thiols into highly water-soluble sulfonates. In an episode of the television program MythBusters, the hydrogen peroxide mix was found to be the most effective smell removal agent.[
