Urgent Care or Oncall Doc for Disney World?

We leave tomorrow, so of course both children got sick. No fevers, seems to be just a cold right now, but we know how quickly those can develop into ear infections, etc. Is there an on-call doctor for the Disney resorts I could call or an Urgent Care nearby I could take them to if things take a turn for the worse once we get down there?

My daughter got sick this past September on our last full day at WDW. We were staying at the CBR. We called the front desk and they put us in touch with a minor medical (Concentra Care i think). They sent a van to the resort to get us and brought us back when we finished free of charge (we did tip the driver $10 each way). Very pleasant experience, the minor med was top notch and everyone was super nice. They made what was could have been a nightmare into a tolerable experience.

We went to
http://www.centracare.org/Locations/FormosaGardens/tabid/14623/Default.aspx

They were in our out-of-state insurance plan.

However, they charged a $50 co-pay, because they said they were an emergency room (hello, they are a walk-in clinic in a strip mall). The bill was $280 to see the dr and be told my son had bronchitis, and get a prescription for amox.

I got it all straightened out after the fact, and I got a check refunded to me. I pretty much had no choice but to pay $50 to get my child seen.

We had actually gone to the dr. before we left, and brought the nebuzlizer with us. "It's just a cold!" Two days into the trip, my son starts running a high fever and couldn't breathe. It wasn't fun, but 24 hours later, he was in much better shape!!!

The same company as other stated picked us up for free from Pop and dropped us off. My son had an bacterial infection in his eye. They were fantastic. It was a co-pay of 35 dollars and they sold us the prescription there as well. Best of all, they came within 10 minutes of us calling and waited for us.

This is good information to know.

My DH got food poisoning on our last trip - we had 2 days left in our trip, and we tried all the stomach medication I packed with us - but we just decided to head home:sad2: once DH stopped vomiting:sick:.

I will definitely check to see if they take our insurance plan.

Thanks!:flower3:

ANother person who visited the urgent care. I woke up our last full day with a horrible ear infection. I had seen our dr at home, she had given me some nasal spray to prevent it, told me to call if it worsened. The PA I saw in FL was great. It was a bit of a wait, but it was nice to get the meds there too! He was amazed at the infection in my ear... not typical for adults nor could I have flown home the next day (thankfully we were driving). This was our sick trip... earlier at Vero my daughter had an ear infection (woke up one night complaining) and my son saw an EMT that same day when he bashed open his foot. To be honest the Disney CM were great with all three incidents... a good place to have a problem I guess!

Thanks for the info guys! I sincerely hope not to have to make use of it, but it's good to have. Both kids got pneumonia last year after having a cold so now I am always super nervous when they get stuff like this.

Thanks for all the help! :lovestruc

Wow.. Nice to know this.
We all caught the flu at Disney. Didn't know we had it till we got home, but we were really sick towards the end of our trip. Called the front desk and was told they sold pain reliever at the front desk and that there was not a doctor we could see on property. I asked if they could recommend anyone local and they said no. They were nice about it, but I wish they had told us about this place you all went to!

It is great that people had good experiences with Centra care, because we did not.

DD was acting cranky one day and the next she had 102 fever and was VERY lethargic. I will not go into the bad front desk service or the idiot Dr, but dd was diagnosed with a cold and she had coxsackievirus. We are going back in April. If we require medical care we will go to the ER, because I do not trust Centra Care to care for my family properly. There are good dr's and and bad dr's everywhere, so my experience may be a fluke.

Have a great trip!

This is from Mom's panel. Hope it helps.

We spent 4 days out of our 6 day WDW vacation in Centracare back in 2/09. They were great. Just so you know the pharmacy does not take any insurance but will give you all necessary paperwork you will need to send to your insurance. I hope you don't need any of this information and that you enjoy your trip!!!!:wizard::wizard::wizard:

We had to go to an urgent care center when my 2 y/o fell off the bed and cut his head open. Disney called the squad and the EMTs recommended a great kids urgent care center. I wish I could remember the name of it though!

Our DD got really sick when we went in Sept. It was the middle of the night and the on call dr wouldn't have been able to get to us for 3-4 hrs. The only other option the front desk gave us was to go to the ER. We ended up in the Celebration ER. We had to call a taxi service there and back. Not a huge deal and the ER staff was great, they even gave her a Mickey balloon when we left that we had to smuggle back to AKL.

We just got back a week ago and I had to visit 2 clinics since DD and I got the flu while at Disney. Centracare is the one that Disney has pamphlets for at the first-aid stations. I went there and they were kind of rude and had an hour and a half wait, so I left. But they do pick you up if you need it.

I looked on the DIS and found a clinic that people recommended. It was Afterhours pediatrics. I waited until the night to take DD, because it was a pediatric clinic, and I thought it would be better. Honestly I did not like it. We were the only people there and they took their sweet time checking us in and for the Dr. to see DD. We got there at 8:50 p.m. They told us the pharmacy in the same shopping center closed at 10, so I was hoping they would make it speedy, so I could get a prescription there if I needed it. They weren't very friendly. They weren't rude or mean, but just not what I was used to at a pediatric practice. Anyway DD ended up having the flu and we did not get out of there until 10:30 p.m.. Did I tell you we were the only patients there? So then I had to go find a 24 hour pharmacy for her tamiflu.

I was not feeling well after that, so in the morning I went to a Walgreens Clinic a little past Downtown Disney. I checked online to see the wait and luckily there was none. So I went, they were efficient, professional and I had the flu, too. I got my prescription filled there and was out in 30 minutes. Plus they only charged my insurance company $60 for the visit plus the flu test. I wish I would have taken DD there. The pediatric visit charged my insurance over 5 times that for the same thing.

I also went to the urgent care peds clinic last october. It was a great resource to have. There was a walgreens minute clinic that I'm sure could have treated the EI in my then 15 months old but they wouldn't see him because he was under 18 months. I guess for me it depends on what is wrong with where I woud go on vacation. If I think EI or uncomplicated flu I'd start with the minute clinic but if my kids were really "sick" we would go to the ER.

We had an interesting trip right before Christmas. Two centra care runs and a middle of the night cab ride to Walgrens.

It seemed pretty easy to get the help we needed. We were happy with Centra Care. We had to pay out of pocket and we're still waiting to see if we are reimbursed. Oh well!
