My very brilliant DS17 decided to jump into a pond at a local park yesterday to celebrate the last day of school plus last soccer game. On his way out of the pond, he stepped on something and ended up with stitches that will have to come out while we are on vacation. Any advice or suggestions of a good, quick place to have them taken out close by? We are renting a car so transportation is not a problem.

Thanks!

Not sure where you are going on vacation but you can look and see if a US Healthworks is close by. Usually they are a walkin only urgent care but call before hand to check. Try looking at www.UShealthworks.com.
ETA: I do not work for them I have just used them a few times. :)
Also check with your insurance before you go anywhere to see if they are on your plan. THe insurnace should also be able to give you names of places for you to go where you are going on vacation.

I have had many patients be stuck with the entire bill because they did not call the ins. co so be sure to do this.

I assume you mean close to Disneyworld, right?

I know you said you would have a car, but there is an urgent care facility that picks you up from Disneyworld property for free. I'm sure you can drive there too, it is right outside of Downtown Disney. We learned this last September when DS got a very high fever. They picked us up on 2 different occassions -- from Magic Kingdom First Aid, and from the Contemporary. Anyway, I still have their info -- it is:

Florida Hospital Centra Care Walk-in Urgent Care
12500 South Apopka Vineland Road
Orlando, FL 32836
407-934-CARE (2273)
Mon-Fri 8 am to midnight
Sat and Sun 8 am to 8 pm

Good luck!

You might call and make sure the Urgent Care will remove stitches they didn't put in. I used to work in an ER that wouldn't remove stitches at all, and the Urgent Care in the same facility didn't like to either, they wanted you to follow up with Family Practice to have it done. Keep in mind, I like in the middle of nowhere and some of the things at the hospital aren't like bigger places, but it can't hurt to make sure.

not to sound mean or anything.. Why not just take them out yourself? All you need to do is clip the threads and pull them out with tweezers, apply some neosporin and a bandage. My boy friends mom is a nurse and she took out my son's last set and that's all she did. She told me what to do next time. Just as long as there isn't any redness or signs of infection you are okay.

How many stitches does he have? I took out my DD's with tweezers, she was four and didn't even flinch. As long as the area is healed and there is no sign of infection (redness, swelling, tenderness), just pop some antibiotic cream on it when your finished.

Adding...my DD only had four stitches, I don't think I would have taken out several though.

Kids...Gotta Love 'Em!

I agree with the pp about removing the stitches yourself IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE (or have your DS do it himself!). It doesn't hurt a bit. You might even be able to get a kit for removing them from your MD's office (if they give you one make sure you pack it in your luggage and not carry-on!). My DH and I are both RN's, and when I sliced my finger open (re-enacting the bathtub scene from Psycho with a real knife! :rotfl2: This was BC-before children...I am much more "mature" now :lmao: ) he removed the stitches for me...

Call your doc and see what he/she says.

Have a wonderful vacation...at least you won't have to worry about your DS - there should be plenty of thrill rides for him! ;)

Thank you for this information. I've made a copy of your post to take with me. Yes, I was talking about my US/WDW vacation.

Thanks to the other posters about taking out the stitches myself. That's what my DS15 suggested! I have watched several times (unfortunately) and will discuss with my family doctor when we go visit him on Tuesday. If he thinks I should go to a facility, then I'll be sure to call in advance and discuss the situation with them, both to verify that they will remove the stitches as well as take my insurance.

I'm so sorry I'm just getting back here. What was supposed to be a very mild, easy going weekend has turned into everything but that. You all have a great holiday tomorrow!

Everything will work out fine.. Have a great time on your trip, sending lots of pixie dust your way... We leave June 11th for POR our first trip, grand gathering for 11 people!

Thank you all again for the well wishes and pixie dust!! Went to the doctor today and he was surprised they were put in last Thursday night because they are healing so well! We get to go back Friday before we leave to have them taken out!!! I am soooo relieved!!! Thanks again for all the suggestions too!!

I went there when I had some abdominal discomfort, and they were able to diagnose appendicitis in about two minutes. They made arrangements for me to go to Sand Lake hospital where I had emergency surgery at 10 pm that night. I had excellent care all around.
