u realize that one + month prior to ur trip you learn that by then you will be unemployed. What do you do? Say the trip is not quite finished being paid off but close

a. Cancel the trip entirely knowing u should be saving this money for a rainey day in case u dont get a job anytime soon.

b. Drop some dates off of it to reflect just the FTP ( currently 10nights)

c. Same as b but also switch to value resort to save even more money.

d. trade your moderate for value and keep the 10 days

e. just finish paying it off and use unused vacation pay u reecive
when laid off for spending money cause u earned it anyways
and deal with the money situation when u get back...Cause everything works out somehow right....>So go and have a good time and dont feel gulity about spending money...

I think it depends on what you realisitically think your chances are of finding another position quickly and at a similar pay scale are.

If I regularly had headhunters calling me and was confident I'd find a similar position and be back to work for the same amount of money in a month or so, I'd go.

If I thought I had a realistic chance of finding a job within a few weeks of returning, at about the same amount of money I'd economize but still go.

If I thought it was going to take some time or I'd be underemployed or would ahve to settle on making a lot less money, I'd cancel. Memories won't do you any good when you receive an eviction notice or they repo your car.

I would try to downscale your vacation if the unemployment you will receive is something you can live on. I wouldn't spend all my vacation money on the Disney trip.

This actually happened to me. I bought it on myself, I quit without a job. I was in a very good financial position however which made it somewhat easier, but even then it is hard to justify a vacation if you don't see income coming in!

I did the ultimate budget trip and had a great time. I packed snacks and limited myself to counter service meals etc. Did most of the tricks you read on here. Downgrading my lodging was not really an option since I was already at value, but I would have done it.

I would probably go with downgrading and possibly even shortining the trip, depending on what your outlook is. Of course when I got a new job I celebrated with a long weekend at AKL!

My husband's employer was bought by a large International Corp. They were axing people left and right. Almost everyone in his companies Corp. HQ was wiped out in one day and escorted out of the building by security. So last summer we heard rumors of the eliminations moving towards the executives in the regional facilities. My DH is a HR Exec so he had an idea that he was on the list. Fortunately, he learned early in his career that with Private Industry you negotiate your severance package in the beginning. So he had about a 9 mos Severance package and we had nice emergency fund that would keep us going for quite awhile.
We decided not to cancel our WDW vacation and we kept our Poly Concierge room, we actually upgraded to a LGV when we checked in. We decided that we wanted to keep things as normal as possible for our dds. It was one of our best trips.
The day after we got back, DH called me from work and said he was coming home. He had been eliminated. A day later we also found out we were expecting child #3.
There is a happy ending, about a 2 months later we had 3 different opportunities to choose from and 2 of them were at much higher salaries.
So we sort of believe we brought home a little of that "Disney Magic" - also a lot of hard work by my DH. :)

Hi, sorry to hear about your job...

I think for me it would depend on whether or not there is another income in your family, how many dependants you have.

If you were confident you would find another job quickly and it is not a huge strain then go... a change is good sometimes and losing a job can bring you a new world of opportunities.. good luck!

I forgot what are the choices here...but I would change the resort to value and cut some days to maybe 7 nights. I think this will help greatly on cutting some cost. I don't know if you're doing any Character meals, I would probably just do one meal. Bringing grocery for breakfast and nik-nak and eating in the room will also help greatly on saving money. Good luck.

If you still think you can manage a trip I would compromise by going with a shorter trip and downgrading to a value and saving the difference. It always helps to have a little extra money when you are going through something like this, especially in today's economy when jobs are more scarce. By doing this, you might not worry so much about every penny that you spend while you are there and that will help you be able to relax and enjoy the trip. Sorry to hear about the job and hope that you find something new soon!

This happened to us too. A month before our trip, my husband got laid off , unexpectedly, from his well paying job. We have four kids and had just splurged on a week long WDW vacation with them.... but had also planned a four day vacation for just me and my husband, to do the things we didn't get to do with the kids.

In our case, our room was paid for (I had scored with the swan for $75 bucks a night) , the plane tickets were paid for, but we hadn't bought our park tickets yet. Initially I thought we should play it safe, seeing as the economy was just beginning it's long slow flush down the toilet - and to be honest, I just didn't feel like I should be vacationing while my husband, who is our main source of income, was out of work. After two weeks of deliberation, and after having recieved our first unemployment check, and no job in sight, my husband said, "oh the heck with it...let's just go" I was worried to death, but I felt this was something he probably needed more than I did.

So I bought the park hoppers and packed my bags. Lots of our friends were also getting laid off and thought we were crazy to be taking a vacation. One week before the trip, my husband landed a decent job (they even agreed to letting him start AFTER we got back!)

And we all lived happily ever after ...the end!
(I think if your trip is almost paid for, and you can afford the part that's not - go anyways.... don't be extravagant, obviously, but have fun - you need it now more than ever!)

Best of Luck
Sue

I was almost in this situation once but my trip was to Vegas when I was notified that my job as well as 6 others were on the line. Lets just say that it put a damper on that vacation. I couldn't do anything about the hotel or the show tickets I bought ahead of time but needless to say, I cut my gambling money into a third and ate at some of the less tasty buffets ( I did come home with a little over $600)

I would tell you that if you can afford it, then go and enjoy but make some small changes. Cut it down to the FTP dates only and take the cheaper hotel package. Like mentioned above, this time you eat at more of the counter rest with maybe two nice meals the entire trip (give a little to yourself). If you really feel like you need a souvenir, go offsite to get it. Trust me it is a lot easier to spend $10 on a WDW shirt offsite than $18-$20 onsite. Allow yourself to have fun as when you get back, your new job is going to require all the energy you can muster. Just remember, keep hope alive, pray and the next year you'll be able to have another Disney vacation but the way that you would prefer to have it.

Obviously only you can make that decision! And it really will depend on your situation with regards to dependents, savings, prospects, debts etc.

I can tell you that as a single young woman, I quit  my job with no prospects and then proceeded to go to Europe with my sister. I even bought a Royal Doulton figurine with my last few pounds in England just before we came home. I didn't have a job for a year and a half, but with it just being me, I was okay with it. I never regretted that trip whatsoever.

If you have a family that is dependent on your job and you think that it may be a while before you get one, maybe postponing is the best idea. Remember, WDW will be there when you are ready, whether it is in October, next year or maybe even in 3!

If you do have an emergency plan in place, and you have a family, then I'd probably change it to a supersized budget trip. Just the FTP, eat in room, counter meals, not a lot of extras. You can do a lot of things with your UMP passes that you have already paid for-so do them! And don't forget the free things. The strolls around the resorts, the window shopping at DTD etc.

It's a tough call. Good luck with your decision!

No family. Just me and Sig other. We are currently living at parents house..Have been since March cause we were saving for a house..Since March I have paid off all of my credit cards leaving me with a 100.00/m student loan and car insurance to pay..thats it.
Beginning in Spetember we May...>I stress the word may have a mortgage to pay..Time is running up on staying with the parents and we have to leave so figured since we would just go fer the mortgage rather than continuing to rent for the same monthly payment...

Also ...No dependants..I just dont know waht we are gonna do..
Prob downsize the vacation. She still at least has her job..

I'm a nervous nelly so I would agree with others who suggest shaving off a few days and downgrading to the value resort.

Cancelling the trip - however - should not be an option! You need a little sunshine, my friend! Go - even for a few days - then come back, roll those sleeves up, and get crackin' on finding a great job!

Good luck to you!

Well, still go for some kind of vacation. I know if it was us I would be nervous but my darling DH would choose (e)
I do hope everything works out for you and you have a Magical trip whatever you decide to do!:D

thanks all for the kind encouraging words of advice.
What i was most afraid of was that I was the financer of this
trip and for the package and the spending money....
But she has come forward to take some of the burden off
of me of paying for everything....It was sort of a gift...why i was paying....

So things look like we are gonna keep it as it is....and hopefully get back on my feet soon or soon there after...

Thanks for playing!!

I'd pick (c), downgrade to a value and go 7 days. Seven days is still a perfectly long vacation, and you'll still have a very Disney time at a value. The thing you don't want is to go on a vacation and have a big stomach ache about every dollar you spend. If you make it a more budget vacation, you may be able to enjoy it better.
