Charlie, our Westie, has a Routine. Every evening he jumps up on the sofa with us and gets cosy then he starts to rotate. Eventually he ends up completely upside down, paws in the air, bearing all.

That’s exactly how Bentley, our Lhasa apso/Maltese mix, sleeps on the couch. He has no shame.

I have a house full of Schnauzers they do the same thing. They have absolutely no shame.

I read somewhere (and we all know that everything you read on the 'Net is true) that when a dog exposes its belly like that, the dog is at its most vulnerable (bringing out the white flag so to speak) and other dogs respect that and won't attack.

Or maybe it's just comfortable that way.

Or maybe it's cooling off the family jewels.

It is a sign of being comfortable in their surroundings and not being threatened. It's a submissive type position so they won't do it unless they absolutely feel comfortable and know they're not going to be injured or attacked.

My friends dog does this - he's a big boy too. He'll get up on the couch or their dual recliners and hang his head off the edge, teh rest of him all spread out. He's a weirdo!
