I wish I had heard about this like. WAY earlier... I signed up for Upromise today to help pay DH's sallie mae student loan. Every dollar counts, right?

So... how do I use it? lol The site is a bit vague so I figured I would ask the experts!

Sorry i'm of no help, but what is Upromise? DH has 2 more student loans left (the third one will be paid off in August ) so any help would be good!

It's a shopping portal. You click through to earn cash back for online purchases that can be credited towards your student loans. Not all loan services will qualify, but you can also get the cash back in a check instead.

There are also cashback rewards for dining and grocery shopping. For dining, just register your credit card with the dining program and use it at the participating restaurants. Usually works better in bigger cities with more participating locations. Be sure to add all your grocery and drug store shopper cards as well since some items will automatically get some cash back.

You can send out shopping links to family and friends to use for their online shopping so you can get credit for it if they are willing to help out. And you can also add their shopper cards to your account.

There is also a internet browser toolbar that you can install so that it automatically notifies you if a website you're on will qualify for $ rewards. Helpful if you tend to forget to go through the main website.

Hope that helps!

Register all of your cc's on it along with shopper rewards cards etc, whatever it alllows you to enter. It seems to change every now and again.

I have to say don't expect alot. We've been doing it 10 years and have made about $500.

It adds up to a little, but I agree don't expect much. We've been doing it for years and years, and we've earned the kids about $70 a piece :)

We have are earned about 500.00 so far for three kids. And DH say we will be able to buy them pencils by the time they go to college. They also have a credit card.

DH signed us up for this years ago -- our oldest was just a toddler. Now she's about to head off to college, and we have maybe a couple hundred dollars. Sure, every dollar counts, but you can find better ways to add those dollars than UPromise.

Ugh. Well this just stinks!!

Thanks for the heads up everyone, I think we'll be looking for better deals.

We might be able to cover the taxes on their books :rotfl:

OP, you can just register shopping cards and credit cards and it will automatically track if you earn anything (like go to certain restaurant or buy a certain product at the store). That's pretty painless. I don't use the shopping links because I like Mypoints for vacation gift cards.

I like that you can automatically transfer your Upromise money into your college savings accounts (ours is a linked 529)

I have had a better experience. I have saved more than $3,000 using UPromise (but I admit to a lot of online shopping) plus we eat out a few times a week.

Okay so it's a cash back earning type website for student loans. Unfortunately the grocery stores I go to don't have reward programs so that wouldn't work, and we rarely go out to eat, except for fast food like Taco Bell. Thanks for all the insight!

I have had a upromise account since my oldest was an infant. She is 11 now and my son is 9. I use the money I get from their upromise accounts to feed their 529 accounts. The upromise deposits are all that goes into those accounts and at this point both kids have just shy of 10,000.00 in their accounts. It is a good program that can be used easily. There are a lot of local places that you can shop to earn cash back.

You can even sign relatives up to be able to shop and contribute to the accounts.

I don't know what we're doing differently than you folks. We've saved almost $3000 for our little guy and he just turned 6. (We started a few months before he was born).

We use the uPromise credit card, put everything on it, and pay it off every month. Works great!

It really depends on how & where you shop. You really have to be deligent about keeping your account updated (newCC#, shopping cards etc) and if you shop online remembering to go through their website.

I just posted this same question on the Community Board! As far as grocery shopping goes, this is one of the only things I understand about Upromise -- you have to go to the site,go through the grocery coupons, select the ones you want, and then when you buy those items using a registered grocery card (we have Jewel and Dominick's), you get credit for those items. You can't just shop. I'm trying to figure it out -- I signed up several months ago and still have $0 in my account, so I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. The restaurants that participate aren't necessarily available for Upromise every day of the week -- if you check before you go out, it'll tell you what days you can get the Upromise bonus. That's all I've figured out so far!

I have been using Upromise for over 10 years. We do have their credit card. We charge everything and pay off the cards every month.

All my online shopping is done thru this site.

Also, when we sold out house 8 years ago, we signed with a Realtor that we found thru upromise.

Since DD10 1/2 was born we have earned $5000. Yes, FIVE THOUSAND!!!! Just for doing what we do... Any amount helps. Add all that interest any we should be able to pay for something, even if its just books.
