Upper bunk beds

Hi :) We are sailing on Jan 10th on the Disney Fantasy, just DH and I and DS 6. We took one cruise before and DS was disappointed that our room didn't have the upper bunk bed as that's where he wanted to sleep.. This time around I believe our room will have the upper bunk. It's still just the 3 of us, so would Disney set it up for my son if that's what we prefer? Or will they automatically prepare the sofa sleeper?
To be honest I'm a bit nervous about the bunk beds, at home DS sleeps on a double bed and he tosses a lot. I know he's certainly old enough to try a bunk and he really wants to.. did you find it's safe, did any of your kids ever fall out? :worried:

If your room has the bunk just ask your stateroom host to make that up each night instead of the couch.

We just stayed on the Wonder with bunk beds. The top bunk has a railing. I'm sure if you ask they will set it up.

If your stateroom has the bunk your stateroom attendant will be happy to make that up for you every night. If this is important to you, be sure the room you are in has an upper since, as you found, not all staterooms have this.

We were just assigned a room 8042 and I believe based on reports I found that it has the upper bunk. Part of me wishes it didn't as I'm a bit nervous having him sleep on it...

Anybody know what the weight limit is for the bunks?

Some thoughts...
  • once the bed is lowered, is there enough clearance for you to use the sofa? It depends how tall the adults are.
  • bunk bed at home is different compared to ship which rocks back and forth
  • there is a medical services in the lower deck.... there should know the bed fall frequency and know how best to secure them
  • you do have travel insurance?

We sailed this past February on the Fantasy and I was concerned about my son sleeping on the bunk since he tosses around at night. I read on these boards that you could ask for a separate bed rail and so I asked our stateroom attendant for one and he set it up for him each night. My son had no problems !

We will definitely ask for extra bed rails, unless DH and I decide that we will not give DS an option to choose the bunk bed. I know how badly he wants to sleep in one though. He doesn't have a bunk bed at home, sleeps on a double bed that is fairly low to the floor.

in reading this comment, i fear you may think the bunk beds are death traps! they are bunk beds. typically, after the bed is turned down by the stateroom host, you can move around the room but i doubt anyone but a child would then view the sofa as a place to be sitting and lounging. i *think* an adult can still "fit" on the sofa sitting up though - i recall DS sitting on the bottom with his DS! :good vibes

while a ship has motion and potentially it could be rough enough that the upper bunk would be "dangerous", typically the ship motion is not rolling people out of bed and flinging them to the ground. and though travel insurance is always a good idea, please don't think you need it because there is a bunk bed! not sure if that's what the PP meant of course! :)

book a room with the bed, let your state room host know you want to try it out and see what you think! :thumbsup2

It's like you read my mind lol. That's exactly what I thought. DH and I decided that if DS wants the bunk bed, we will ask the stateroom host for more rails and try it out.

Please let your DS sleep on the bunk. As risks go, this is an extremely low one.

We didnt have a bunk bed on this last cruise but will have one in the stateroom we were confirmed for in the upcoming cruise. Our son is very excited. Does anyone have photos of what the bundbed looks like?:confused3

Our 4 yr. old DGS slept in an upper bunk in our stateroom on a Magic cruise last March. He only used one guard rail and was fine. The only problem was that his pillow went "overboard" on the end of the bunk a couple of times. We will be going on a Dream cruise in January and he is already looking forward to his upper bunk.

Our 17 yo son wanted to sleep up there too, which I thought was funny, but he's never had a bunk. He was probably 5'8" at that time. It was quite a long arm hanging over the edge! :rotfl2:

I have a picture of my teen sitting on the bed under the bunk. She's about 5'3" at the time of the picture and sitting upright "criss cross applesauce" there is about 4-6 inches between her head and the bunk- so the couch would still be functional with the upper bunk in place.

The girls found the upper bunk on the ship "a thousand times better" than the upper bunk on the train! lol But only one of them liked it enough to request to sleep there this next cruise. One of my 10 year olds will be up top, one by the window and the teen will be on the bottom.
