Upgrading to APs

The first park day of our upcoming trip is a blackout day, so we are planning on buying park hoppers and then upgrading. My question is, can we upgrade that first day (blackout day) and still be able to come and go or do we need to wait until the next day to do it? We would love to be able to start using our discounts asap, but not at the risk of missing out on park time

As a side note, we will only have 3 park days this trip; two of them are MM days. Would you suggest doing the MM on Sat and upgrading to APs for the discounts asap, or waiting to use the MM on Tues, which will likely be a less crowded day in general?

Yes you can upgrade on a blackout day and still come and go as you want. I would use the MM ASAP and upgrade to get the discounts.
