Upgrading our car

Our next trip is for 3 weeks, 2 in Orlando and 1 in New Port Richey. There are 4 wonderful ladies with me. Had to say that in case any of them read this. Anyhow, they don't intend to take much luggage on the way out as they are big shopaholics. Getting our luggage into the car on the way out should be relatively easy. BUT, when we leave Orlando we'll be well and truely loaded.

I've got 2 queries really. I know you can upgrade at the airport, so how much does it cost to change to a people carrier ? On the other hand for the first 2 weeks a standard car will be fine. Upgrading at the end of the 2nd week would be preferable. Has anybody done this in Florida ? I know it's possible in the UK.

Thanks,

Tony

Hi

I have never changed vehicle in Orlando, but we were upgraded, at the airport, free of charge in 2000 from an intermediate 4 door to a 7 seater minivan and would not rent anything else now. We were 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 child at the time and found the extra space so valuable. IMHO I would be tempted to rent the 7 seater for the entire time especially with 5 adults.

Sorry cannot advise regarding switching vehicles halfway through but do not see any reason why you cannot do it.

The 7 seaters are great, we tend to always get one of these.

You can upgrade from the airport but the cost would depend on the difference between the car you have booked and the price of the people carrier.
They are not cheap, to be honest we always upgrade through Virgin in the UK, works out cheaper.
Having said that the Car hire companies always seem to have offers on certain types of vehicle, you could just be lucky

If the standard of car you have booked is not available the company have to provide a free upgrade to the next size

Yes, this is not a problem, providing it has been arranged in advance. We were originally going to do a two centre and drop the car off at Miami....no problems involved arranging that (with Dollar)...though in the end we did a 3 weeker with the middle week out of Orlando, so the drop off wasnt required.

As for upgrading....it is very expensive if you pay the "book price" at the airport. In all but one of our holidays, Hubs has sweet talked an upgrade for less than half of the book price. Of course, we never really NEEDED the upgrade, it was just cool to have a nicer car. If you think you are really 100% gonna have to have the bigger car, then its usually cheaper to do it this end (especially if you have your own all inclusive cover). There should be no reason you cant change cars at any point...Dollar at any rate will do it. Im sure most other companies would be the same.
