upgrading one ticket in a package

We will be in Disney in a few weeks. We have a package with 9 day park hoppers. One member of our party will be coming back to Disney in January and plans to spend 2-3 days in the parks. What is the best way (if any) for us to upgrade his ticket only...or is the only option to upgrade to an annual pass for him, which may not be worth it.

There is no longer a no-expiration option, so upgrading to an AP would be the only way to use the ticket for both trips.

If they go 9+3 days, an annual Platinum pass is cheaper than two separate ticket purchases.

Also if they get the AP then you get 10% off a lot of merch and most table service so consider that savings into what the AP is actually costing. you don't mention who is in the group or how many, but once they have an AP they also can buy the tables in wonderland card for even more discounts at table service and it's the only discount at WDW that has alcohol discounts as well. For their return trip, they might find a passholder discount as well making it even lower cost for that trip (although room discounts tend to be minimally more than genpop available discounts).

EDIT to add, also 10 days is the max length you can get a ticket purchased domestically for WDW. and it would expire as you can't make it non-expiring anymore.

If he uses that ticket at all, it will expire long before he is able to use it in January. As noted, there is no longer an option for non-expiring tickets. He would need to upgrade it to an annual pass. If he goes to parks enough days, an annual pass may still be worth it. Especially if he needs parking and is interested in the photos being included.
