Upgrading movies from VHS to DVD or to Blu-Ray?

I'm one of those poor planners whose children are 8 years apart. Our first set of Disney movies are primarily on VHS, the popular media when my son was born. We still have a VHS player in the house that DD uses to watch her brother's old Disney movies.

Do you guys upgrade to DVD when you see one for a good price? I've thought of doing this when I see them for $12 or less, but I'm thinking Blu-ray may eventually take over DVD and I'll be doing another upgrade.

We got rid of VHS tapes a few years ago and we have every movie we had on VHS now on DVD, but we started buying DVD's about 10 years ago when we got our first player. With Disney movies it was easy to do every time Disney re-released a movie.

Just got a Blu Ray for Christmas. Our DVD's play on it really well. I did buy Monsters Inc, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and UP on Blu Ray, but I don't know if I would replace every movie we had. DH did buy all his James Bond movies on Blu Ray and we bought National Treasure and Christmas Vacation on Blu Ray (just saw them at Best Buy and picked them up). But, I don't know if I will replace other movies. I may just buy new Blu Rays when they come out and keep all our DVD's.

I still have all of my VHS tapes and can still watch them on my VCR and I don't want to get rid of them. We have bought many more on DVD and have duplicates of some, but as far as Blu-Ray, we have gotten some Blu-rays of VHS and DVD's we have, but they are really special movies. Most of the time now, we just buy on Blu-ray, unless the DVD is significantly cheaper

I don't think I will get rid of my VHS tapes, because some of the are first release and are sentimental to me, thos are usually the ones I have on DVD and now Blu-ray.

BTW, DVD's look much better played on a Blu-ray player, the picture quality is fabulous, even with our older TV.

I have found that it's been cheaper to buy the blu ray combo packs on the new movies (and by that, I mean the Disney movies that are coming out) than the regular DVDs. I had $10 off coupons for both Up and G Force blu ray combos, and when they were first released it was cheaper to buy those!

I don't anticipate replacing any dvds with blu rays since you can still watch them on a blue ray player. I also have a few Disney movies on VHS...those I have considered replacing only because I'm not sure we have a working VCR in the house anymore LOL!

As it turns out my DH traded a co-worker $75 in staples rewards checks (that he gets for buying supplies for work) for a brand new blu ray that the other guy got from a furniture store promo that he didn't need because he watches his movie on his wii (or play station).

We got rid of all of our VHS movies when we had our fire, most of them were ruined from heat damaged anyway so it wasn't that hard. We then started rebuying on DVD. We've rebuilt our collection but we know have a Blu Ray player as well. So far we only have a few movies on Blu Ray tho, the new Star Trek, Terminator Salvation and for Christmas I gave DBF every Star Trek movie ever made on Blu Ray, but we didn't have any of these on regular DVD so they were all new movies. In the future we plan to rate movies and buy based on that. We will get Avatar on Blu Ray, but we will get other movies on regular DVD. And we don't plan to upgrade what we currently own to Blu Ray, that would take years and cost us thousands.....LOL

If you are unsure about upgrading a DVD to the Bluray version, check www.blu-ray.com and search for the name of the movie and look at the ratings and reviews. Most are worth it, some are not (for instance we have the Oceans 11 and Oceans 12 movies on DVD and were going to get Oceans 13 on Blu but the reviews are bad and say it is a poor transfer and that the DVD version is better, so we'll get the regular DVD of Oceans 13 at some point to complete the collection).

Action movies (especially if you have surround sound) and Pixar-type animated movies are great on Blu-ray. Our favorite movies we upgrade, others we leave just on DVD, new we go Blu.

Also on the www.blu-ray.com website is a price tracker so you can add any movies you might be thinking about upgrading, set your target price, and it will email you if Amazon's price gets to your range. Very cool. They track everything, and the forum is full of deals. You can get Blus for $9.99 in some cases and mostly under $19.99 for brand new releases now if you know where to get them (and avoid Best Buy, etc. where you almost always pay more).
