upgrading ipohne 3gs to iphone 4s and you want unlimited data

I figured I post this since it took a while to realize I could keep parts of my old cell plan which saved me money. We haven't gotten next months bill yet to confirm.

We upgraded our old iphone 3gs phones. Our old contracts had the $5 for 200 texts and $30 for unlimited data.

When you look at the new phone plans, the $5 texting is gone and so is $30 for unlimited data. We were really hating the idea of having the $20 unlimited texting, because that was $30 a month more than we were currently paying for txting over both phones.

However if you purchase your new phone thru the apple store, you can keep your umlimited plan for $30 a month if your a heavy data user, and the $5 txting.

Our phone plane actually dropped, since I'm on wifi at home all the time, and so I went to the $15 200mb data package and my dh kept the old $30 unlimited since he hits 2Gb many months a year.

If you try to upgrade thru att online it doesn't give you the $5 txting or $30 unlimited option for your plan. You have to go with one of the new plans.

Also we tried to buy phones online thru the apple store, and they showed no availability. However we went to the store and they had what we wanted even though on line said they didn't have any iphone 4gs in stock, we would have had to wait a couple weeks for shipping.

DH and I went to the AT&T store to upgrade his 3GS iPhone to the iPhone 4S when it first came out and they let us keep his current unlimited data plan and current texting plan too. No changes to our contract -- just extended our contract another 2 years is all.

Same here, only it was from a 3g to a 4g. The 4gs wasn't out yet. But I still was able to continue the unlimited plan.

An AT&T employee that posts here said it definitely would be allowed to keep the unlimited data plan if you were upgrading phones. I never buy phones thru AT&T only the Apple store, so I'm guessing I won't have any issue with this next year when we upgrade.

As long as you have the smartphone (iphone) unlimited data plan now you are grandfathered in when you switch to another smartphone (iphone). The moment you drop or change the unlimited data plan you will not be able to add it on later.

Yeah, but when you order a phone on AT&T, it asks you to select which data plan you would like if you purchase a smart phone. It's really weird, because it doesn't know if you have a data plan yet or not.

I'm wondering if that's to trick people into getting the new data plan, rather than sticking with the old unlimited.

I love the fact that you're grandfathered in to your current rate plan, even if you upgrade. My bf's cousin recently upgraded his phone, and Sprint wanted to charge an additional $10 per month even though there's already a data plan on the contract. My bf would have to pay that too if he upgrades through them. Right now he only has to pay like $10 a month for his additional line with data plan.

When I upgraded from the 3G to the 4 I kept my unlimited data plan (and they had already introduced the 200MB plan a few months earlier) automatically. Nothing changed. I believe that people who already had it get "granfathered" in.

well, good to hear about going into the at&t store. When you try to upgrade online, it doesn't give you the options.

My husband upgraded his 3Gs to a 4s online, and there were some issues keeping his unlimited data plan, but they got worked out.

Huh - I don't know. I just went online and tried and upgrade on one of our phones to see what it would do and it kept the $30 plan for us.

Huh - I don't know. I just went online and tried and upgrade on one of our phones to see what it would do and it kept the $30 plan for us.

When my husband ordered his phone online, it did say he had the unlimited plan, but when he activated the phone he had no data plan at all and they said he hadn't signed up for one (cue my head exploding) and the person he spoke to didn't have the ability to give him the unlimited plan back. It got worked out, it just took some phone calls. But I can see someone believing they no longer had that option.
