We made ressies for a SUV through Dollar about 2 months ago because I came across a great deal - $199.00 for the week. I really would prefer a mini-van but the price was much more. Would Dollar consider a request for a change from a SUV to a mini-van an "upgrade" and charge more or a "downgrade" and call it even? That is if there are mini-vans available. Thanks to anyone who can help.

From my experiences, anytime you (the customer) initiate the change in vehicle whether it is before you get to the counter, or when you are at the counter they will charge you if you go to a higher class of vehicle. Now, if you get to the counter and they are out of the class of vehicle you reserved they should put you in the next higher class at no extra charge. Chances are if you get to the counter with your SUV reservation and ask to change to a Minivan you will have to pay whatever the difference between what you reserved the SUV for and what the Minivans are renting for at the counter that day. It can't hurt to ask, maybe the price will be the same or you will have a nice agent. I just wouldn't count on it. This pretty much applies for all the companies I have used not just Dollar, except for Alamo who forced me into a higher priced car, but that is another story.

Their counter people are instructed to push you to take as many options and upgrades at the counter as possible to increase the amount you spend. (However, if you join Fastlane they don't do it to you.)

IME; National is MUCH more flexible about this kind of thing, so you might want to watch them carefully to see if they get any specials on what you want, or anything close to it. Still no guarantees, of course, but they are more generous than Dollar.
