We are currently booked in two cat.4's for this September. Has anyone tried to upgrade to either a cat. 1,2,or 3 at the port from a cat 4, and if so, how much? Just curious if DCL gives any kind of deal. thanks.

The chance of upgrading to cat 1,2,or 3 is extremely low as there are not very many of these cabins available and they are booked sometimes years in advance. It never hurts to ask; a last minute cancellation can always occur. In my experience, an upgrade at the port is much cheaper than the cost of booking the higher cabin originally...however, frequently upgrades are not available.

Also, you would lose the benefits of advanced bookings that are available to concierge level guests as you won't be at that level until boarding.

Bottom line--call DCL now if you are willing to pay full price for the upgrade. They will put you on a waiting list just in case something becomes available.

On our recent 4 night cruise we were booked in a cat. 5. Someone had just cancelled their cat. 3 so we took it. They have a chart detailing the upgrade prices. To go from a cat. 5 to a 4 was $298.00 and from a 4 to a 3 was $598.00, $896.00 total. Everyone seemed very surprised that a suite had come available. I got the impression that this was not the norm. BTW, it was worth every penny!

Dear Gamom, Was that $896. total for the cabin, or per person? The reason why I'm asking is I have 5 people in that room that I would want to switch. Thanks.

mickey squared, It was $896.00 TOTAL, not per person. I don't know if they calculated that amount based on the fact that there were four of us in the room. I didn't think to ask that question. Maybe someone else knows the answer. Anybody???

The price to upgrade applies to the first 2 people in a cabin. Children pay the same rate in all categories (based on the age of the child and the date of the sailing), as do 3rd, 4th, etc. adults. A 3 year old is a different price than an 8 year old, a Christmas sailing is more than a September sailing. But a 3 year old at Christmas in a cat 4 is the same price as a 3 year old at Christmas in a cat 11.

So...if you are upgrading 2 people, the cost would be X. If you are upgrading and adult and 3 kids, the cost would still be X. If you are upgrading 3 adults and one kid, it is still X. Does that make sense?

The examples you gave are true, but the general statement is false. Check out the 12/11/04 Eastern for example. A 6 year old in cat 9 - 11 pay $499, cat 8 is $599, and cat 7 and above is $699.
