Upgrades at VB from garden to ocean view rooms?

Has anyone ever been upgraded from Garden View to Ocean View rooms. My husband wants to save points and get garden view, but I'm hoping if there's space staff may upgrade us to ocean view if I asked if any available.

Does this kind of thing ever happen?

Does it involve more points? If it does, then it's highly unlikely. The only way it might happen is if they are not at full occupancy or the garden view was not in service.

Yes, oceanview is more points. To keep things fair for all members, DVC generally only upgrades because of some problem with the room you originally booked that makes it unavailable.

I recieved a suprise upgrade once at BWV.. We went from a 2BR-Standard to a 2BR-Preferred with a view of Luna Park...

The only reason I believe we got it though is because I had a Standard view Studio booked for my sister's family who was coming in two days later, and I asked the CM at check-in if there was anyway we could get the rooms somewhat close. She must have switched the view without telling me...

I suppose my friend was upgraded at VB years ago when I treated her to a couple of nights in a garden view room and she ended up overlooking the pool area and with a side view of the ocean, which she loved.

I was not quite so pleased when, a few years later, I was given exactly the same room only this time it had been booked as ocean view for more points

The best way to try and get an ocean view at VB without using "extra" points is to go the villa, not inn route. While BWV is the only DVC property with "preferred" vs. "standard" view villa categories , one can increase their chances of getting an ocean view VB villa by:

- booking a Friday arrival
- booking a particular category and type of villa (and no, not the $$$$$ cottages)
- putting in certain key requests at time of ressie
- making sure you check in early the day of arrival

There's no "guarantee" all that will get you an ocean view....

...but it significantly improves the odds.
