Upgrades at DVC properties?

We are renting points at BWV this coming fall. Our reservation is for a standard view. 2 bedroom suite. I'm wondering whether there is any possibility of an upgrade to that reservation and would love to hear whether you've ever been upgraded in your DVC reservation. Thanks!

NO
Upgrades are for operational resort needs only. As a timeshare and not a hotel DVC is designed to run at near 100% capacity at all times. DVC members pay with their points for exactly what they book
If you asked and for some unfathanable reason you were able to be updated the member you are renting points from would have those points deducted from their balance.

DVC points upgrades are basically unheard of. The only way you might get one would possibly be for maintenance issues that would render the type of room you booked uninhabitable. I would assume you are hoping to be upgraded to a savannah view - while this is relatively common with cash reservations, on DVC points your chances are pretty much nil.

DVC on points do not get upgraded. The only time it really happens is when a refurb or issue takes rooms out of use and they need to shift you into something available - which is to say it only happens when there is a problem. Given that BWV will be recently refurbed, I wouldn't count on that.

Don't book a timeshare with a hotel mentality.

Upgrades at DVC properties generally only happen if the room they were going to to put you in needs to be taken out of service for some reason, and there are no other rooms of that category available. Upgrades are rare at hotels, and even more rare at timeshares, for the reasons stated above.

Guests will sometimes ask for a complimentary upgrade at check-in. This is definitely not something you want to do when renting points. It shouldn't happen, but there have been situations where the upgrade was given, and the additional points were taken out of the owner's account. The owner then gets a nasty surprise when they go to book their own vacation, and they don't have the points to do it. I assume the owner would then be looking for financial compensation from the renter.

So, long story short: when you rent points, you will get exactly the room type that you booked.

I mean, I'm sure its happened but it's super rare, even more so than with a "regular" reservation (non-DVC).

For DVC you really should book the category you want/are okay with. We've rented points four times and have never been upgraded (studios all the time).
- Saratoga Springs we were actually "downgraded," although not really. We checked in and were given an AMAZING room that overlooked DTD and was such a quick walk. We got to the room, and it was FILTHY and GROSS. And not just like, oh housekeeping did a horrible job. They did NO job. It had yet to be made up from the previous guest. And that guest TRASHED IT. They still said we could have the room, but honestly, it grossed us out so much we declined. I thought MAYBE because of their error (okay, it's TRAUMATIC seeing someone else's uncleaned room) they would do something, but they didn't. I didn't ask, because I didn't expect it, but of course it would've been a nice touch for their accident. I AM SCARRED!
- At BWV, we booked the Boardwalk View, because it's what we wanted (and it was WORTH IT). Whatever extra it costs, do it. No, you're not in your room a lot, but seeing that GORGEOUS vista every morning, watching the street performers and hustle and bustle at night, the fireworks, etc, from our PJS on the balcony - SO WORTH IT, and I mean WORTH IT.
- At GFV we booked what they had, which ended up being a lake view, and honestly to this day I don't even know what they offer, it's all that was available because at the time it was so new. We viewed the lake, so I'm assuming there was no upgrade. Although, we did have a great view of Space Mountain and the water pageant, so that was AWESOME!
- At AKL-Jambo I THOUGHT we got upgraded for the first time EVER! We booked standard because I didn't care about view and we had a savannah view (looking back now, I would never book standard there again unless you luck out like we did). I mean, it was a full out savannah view. Zebra's and giraffes RIGHT THERE. Then I remembered reading on Dis about the re-classified rooms, which this must have been. It was PERFECT! Still, for a second I was like, oooooh upgrade!!!

So yeah, overall, book what you'd be happy with and know that there's a 99.999999999% chance you won't be upgraded. Kind of a bummer, I know, it's always so fun to get the unexpected!

DVC aside, yes, being upgraded to a savannah view room at BWV would be, truly, unprecedented . . . :flower1:
