Hi,
I'm new to this forum, so please bare with me if this is a stupid question (also new to DVC)

If a upgraded view room (same size) is available, have there been any on the spot upgrades...as a freebie? I'm not looking to ask for a specific view, but i know for the nights i'm staying currently, that an upgraded view is available.

I know if you're paying, sometimes disney will upgrade you to a better view or a different resort...not sure how it works with DVC properties using points.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Generally not. Some people have reported this happening when the room type they had reserved was not available due to maintenance, but this is a rarity, in my observation. Also remember that if you are seeing availability on the Disney website, that does not equal availability through DVC as those are separate room inventories.

Hope this helps - have fun!

Not very often. As already mentioned..if you arrive and the only rooms that would fulfil your reservation are impacted by maintainence or such, then you may get moved to a better villa. But that's about the only way it happens. You really are best off booking the level/view you want, rather than hoping to get upgraded to it.

timeshares are not the same as hotels.

buy the number of pts you need to get what you want.

when people book DVC resorts on cash (i.e. more like a hotel experience based on DVC's discretion on using the pts it owns), there is a teeny tiny chance of an upgraded view or room type.

when you book a stay based on points, though, the resort has virtually no flexibility in moving you to another room type. DVC resorts are usually close to 100% occupancy anyway, so unless there is something seriously wrong with the room such that you HAVE to be moved, the front desk people don't have the discretion to upgrade you.

keep in mind the owners of DVC are just that, owners. ideally, if they sell out a resort, there is only a small percentage of pts held back for maintenance (and also some pts that DVC gets back for trades and as breakage inventory at the last minute). but theoretically, if BCV is 100% sold out, there are only enough pts for BCV owners to stay there during the year...with no flexibility in moving a few owners up a category. don't feel bad for asking the question, but it's just not how timeshares work...

There is virtually no chance that you will be upgraded.
I'd go a step further, it is inappropriate to ask for an upgrade using points unless one is prepared to pay the extra points related to the upgrade.
