upgrade question....

so i have a question about these fabulous upgrades people have been posting.

I already have a discounted room, at POR. It works out to about $107 Including tax. (its a package with tickets and dining also).

When people call disney and get an upgrade for $12 or so, are they refering to a full price package that they had, the called and got rebooked at a discount, AND upgraded resort, but still are paying only slightly more than their original full price package.

Do you think that I have any hope in getting an upgrade on my room? (i need it for 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 infants).
I did call and was offered a room in the Boardwalk for an additional $1900 (for 10 nights)

It seems to be me that most of the recent posts have been a result of discounts. For instance, you book a package at rack rate or maybe a AAA discount at a value, and then when something like the visa discount or AP discounts come out, people upgrade to a moderate, the change in their total price might be very minimal. Presumably, if they stayed in the same hotel category, they'd be seeing a significant discount.

Rarely (almost never?) are the upgrades offered at any sort of a discount on their own ... Disney doesn't need to fill rooms like other hotels that offer you a discounted upgrade when you arrive.
