Can upgrades be done at check-in? I seem to recall we asked once while we were checking in and we were told we had to call MS. (something about they couldn't do the point adjustment there)..
There have been cases where the front desk cancelled the original reservation and the points went into holding. Then they used other points from the account. Mess to straighten out.

What do you mean by "upgrade"? If you ask for a different room, they may be able to do it (subject to the errors and hassles mentioned above), but they'll charge you the additional points. If you want to pay the points for a different room, make that change before you get there. The only "upgrades" on arrival we ever hear about are when, say, a room goes down for maintenance, not when a member asks.

I've done a points paid upgrade at check in. MS did have to be called and I had to speak to them. My reason for upgrading at check in was because I wasn't able to book the upgrade from home due to it not being available.
I asked if the view I wished had possibly come available and it had. I also had soon to expire points to use up, so going up a room category was one way of recovering those points. It took probably 15-20 minutes to get it done. MS was open at the time.
