OK, so pre-purchased (from an outside vendor that is well respected)....a 5-day Hopper Plus about a month ago. I have not used it. I have the hard ticket in hand. So, I'm thinking of going to Guest Services and upgrading it. Do I have to use a day first? If not, what value will they use to apply it against an AP. I believe the AP with tax will come to $904. I'm just trying to figure out the balance.

Thanks!

I haven’t upgraded in awhile, but I’m pretty sure you have to use it first. We did it at Guest Services right inside AK a few years back. And the cost is based on Disney’s price of the pass, not the discounted one you paid. The expiration date is based on the first day the pass was used, not the day you upgrade.

1. That'll work.
2. Nope. (But, you CAN if you like.) Either way, it won't affect the ability to upgrade, nor the cost to upgrade.

Was about to ask a similar question then realised I should probably just continue this thread. Has anyone tried to do the upgrade via the app? I’ve seen reports online that it’s possible but cannot find the option myself in the app (although I didn’t buy my tickets direct from Disney). Wondering if you need to use the ticket first for that or not and any advantages either way.

1. Some reports that you need to wait to do that after you are at WDW.
(Reports that you CAN upgrade tickets from authorized resellers/discounters.)

Using the ticket should not affect the ability to upgrade via the App (but, since the "tech" involved might be a bit "odd," you never know.)

We have a package booked for next year and my mom is staying in the room with us. We are upgrading to AP and she is not. Can I call and upgrade our tickets or do I need to wait until we get there?

You will need to wait. All guests on a package must have the same tickets and/or dining plans.

I went to the ticket sticky. Like another poster above, I thought it needed to be used once for admission before "bridging". Is it a change that it doesn't need to be used, or am I misremembering?

I was thinking the same thing. If I am remembering correctly, the difference is when ticket prices go up. I thought the deal was if you upgraded before you went in, they applied the Disney price of your ticket when it was purchased. But if you already used it, they would apply the current price.

For example:

You bought your ticket in January. Your ticket cost $300, but you paid $280 via UT or some other broker.
Tickets prices went up in June, that same ticket now costs $320 at the gate.

You go in August. If you upgrade before entering, they would give you a credit of $300. If you went inside, then tried to upgrade, they would give you a credit of $320. The $280 you actually paid is not a concern.

Anyway, that is what I used to think the rules were. Did it once, several years ago, cannot actually remember what happened. Please feel free to correct me.

Tickets do not need to be used in order to upgrade nor to affect the cost of the upgrade.
The info used to be that it would matter, but it may have been accurate at the time -or- it might have never been the case.

This is really crazy......but...OK, here goes. I paid about $485 for a 5-day hopper Plus. I think I now want to buy an AP. For argument's sake, let's say the AP cost $900 even with tax included. So, I haven't used the ticket. Will my "exchange" price be $900-485= $415. Meaning, I will have to shell out $415 for a new ticket (please know that I don't care about the plus part of it......I can pass on the waterparks).

Or.......say I use the ticket for all five days and on my last day I go up to Guest Services and say I want to upgrade to an AP. Will they still charge me $415 or will it cost me $900 since I don't have any days left???

You can just click HERE and use the ACTUAL numbers to compute the upgrade cost, to the penny.
The upgrade cost will be the same whether you decide to (or not to) USE any part of your original ticket before doing the upgrade.
---------------------

YES, even after you have USED any or all of the assets ("days") on your original ticket, you WILL get the FULL amount of the value of the original unused new ticket in the upgrade transaction.
This is because your new AP will be BACK-DATED to start on the day that you first used the original ticket. This is why it is called an "upgrade."
You are "upgrading" the original ticket and making it as though you had bought an AP in the first place.
You can do the upgrade as late as, but no later than, close-of-business ON the same day that you use the original ticket's final asset. (And still get the full original value of the original ticket as though you had not used any of it.)

HOWEVER, if you actually USE any of the "plus options" on the original ticket BEFORE you upgrade to AP, you MUST then buy the AP that includes the "plus options."

Whether you upgrade before you enter your first park or on the last day, the upgrade price will be exactly the same. The start date of your AP will also be exactly the same... which is the first day you used your ticket to enter a gate. For these reasons, I would recommend deciding to upgrade early in your visit if you want to take advantage of food and merchandise discounts.

My biggest recommendation to anyone upgrading is to know the cost of the upgrade before you go. The first time I tried to upgrade my MYW ticket to an AP the CM at the ticket office quoted me a much higher price than I expected for the upgrade. I politely, but firmly, explained that the should be the difference between the two tickets. She ended up having to get on the phone and have another CM come over to assist. Eventually they got it worked out, but I could have ended up paying a lot more for the upgrade if I hadn't done the math ahead of time.
