Cold!!!!!!!!!!!!! I live in Minnesota, where we have tons of cold, yet today my kids are home for 2 hours. UGH!!! Of course this is the day I need to get to the office cuz I have a ton of work to do LOL. Geez, the mercury hits a measly -20 (air temp, not windchill) and the school district freaks out. What really makes me laugh is, how much warmer will it really be in 2 hours??

Erika

The buses probably wouldn't start because of the cold. Maybe they need those 2 hours to jump them and get them going. Diesels are funny that way. My car always starts in real cold, but my DH work truck (deisel) doesn't. In fact lately he's been plugging it in everynight.

I had thought about the buses too, but they started yesterday at -15, and all the schools 15 miles from here are open and on time. I think our school district just wants to drive me nuts LOL.

Where in Minnesota are you?
we are in Hutchinson, where according to the weatherbug it is a "balmy" -16F & we did not have a 2 hour late start.
I did see on the news that a lot of schools did

Wow, a balmy -16, I think we are up to -19 now LOL. I am in Otsego, the Elk River District. None of the city or suburban schools are late, but most of us just outside the main suburbs are delayed. I saw Monticello, Buffalo, Big Lake, etc all delayed.

Stay warm today!!!

This weather is crazy, guess we have been spoiled for the last few years :sunny:

Heard we are suppose to be in this deep freeze for a few more day....sending warm thoughts :sunny:

Geez! I think we're at a balmy -13 here in Albert Lea. Why don't y'all come south for the day!:sunny:
No late start here either.

That's it, I'm packing up and heading south LOL!!! Gas would have been easier to pump this morning too, at the balmy -13.

Ahhhh the Minnesota thread! What do you bet our -20 (which is what my digital thermometer said in my backyard this AM before school started) doesn't make the national news like the cold snap that hit the east coast a few weeks back.

I was happy that my car had no problems today but could tell it was working hard in this cold.

I hear Embarrass was at -43 air temp this AM. That would be a rude awakening.

Last week Thursday our superintendent closed because of "cold". It was 7 degrees (no I didn't forget the minus sign) with a -10 windchill.

Of course our middle school theater group was livid because that was opening day - the matinee for half the school was missed and we had to lobby to open. Strange, as soon as we asked if there was money in the budget to make up for the lost tickets we were given permission for the show to go on.

Yesterday was a snow day because it was really bad roads - huge dump of system and lake effect over 2 days and it was rationale.

But today is even COLDER than last Thursday an school goes on as scheduled. Of course the kids are confused....the parents are confused....and I think the super is going to have some "splainin to do Lucy!"

Yeah, our cold snaps never make the national news. Neither do our snowstorms. I've always noticed only the weather on the east coast makes news. Oh well.

A mother of my dd's friend went up to go snowmobiling for 4 days in International Falls, they were starting their snowmobiling this morning, 250 miles a day!!!!!!!!!!! UGH, no way you'd get me on a moving vehicle with no heater in that weather.

DH has to head out on one of those infernal machines occasionally for work. Although the older he gets the less he looks forward to it! And I have NEVER been able to see the "fun" in that activity. So I'm with you on that one!

Well, as someone from the East Coast, you have my sympathy. ::yes::

We've been having a long cold spell here too. Can you imagine how warm +35 is going to feel???? T-shirt weather!!!

But at the same time, did anyone else think about how much we're starting to sound like our parents and grandparents? "I walked to school, 25 miles through 30 feet of snow and it was uphill BOTH ways!!!"

Well, at least in my "school days", you actually had to have bad weather FIRST before cancellations/delays. And the temp was NEVER a factor! (((Done ranting))):duck:

Get this, they have already announced a 2 hour late start for tomorrow!!! They never did this when I was in school. Although, I went to a suburban school, and they did have a full day today.

Too funny! Erika, I heard a lot of talk on 830 today that A LOT of parents were calling in wondering why the schools were open when the windchills were so bad. I wonder if that's fueling some of the closings.

I know for us, in our district, in elementary school ifyou live within 1 mile of your school, there is no bussing and you are expected to walk. We live within a mile but there's no way I was letting my kids walk in -38 windchills to school. With a lot of school cutbacks these days, there are more walkers than ever and I can see some parents complaining. I am fortunate enough to be able to drive mine to the door, but some might not be.

Once they get to school it's not an issue. The school is warm just like home. It's the getting there that is the issue.

This morning we are at a wonderful -27. Surprisingly we are still only two hours late. All the other schools in this area, Buffalo, St, Michael/Albertville, Big Lake and Monticello are all closed for today.
